‘Space Ghost Coast to Coast,’ Secretly TV’s Most Influential Show

Few people afford Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Cartoon Network’s strange, seminal comedy, its rightful place in the pantheon. But from its bargain-basement launch in 1994 to its place at the center of the wildly popular Adult Swim lineup in the 2000s, it helped introduce cringe comedy to the American viewing public, deconstructed the idea of the talk show beyond repair for a generation of comedians, and changed the look and feel of the entire animation art form.

So many bits of SG:C2C have stayed with me over the years and show up in everyday conversation.
"It feels like Wednesday EVERY DAY!"
"Are you getting enough oxygen?"
"Make sure it's bloated!"
"You're not... Johnny Carson, are you?!"

And of course, the entire Brak song book. "OH WAIT, I'M SITTIN' ON IT! I'M SORRY, SANDWICH!"

Great article about Tad Ghostal and his crew. I'm also pretty sure there was some early cartoon cavalcade hosted by Space Ghost that had both an early Power Puff Girls and an early Dexter's Lab.

I'm also pretty sure there was some early cartoon cavalcade hosted by Space Ghost that had both an early Power Puff Girls and an early Dexter's Lab.

Space Ghost hosted a "World Premiere Toon-In" special in 1995, featuring the first PPG and Dexter shorts created as part of the Cartoon Network-commissioned "What A Cartoon!" series. The Council of Doom served as judges, and Craig McCracken "won" based on his stunning performance in the swimsuit competition.

During the episode with Lassie, my now ex-wife was seriously considering calling me an ambulance, as, at the time, I was completely unable to speak, was sweating uncontrollably, and entirely unable to catch my breath.

With laughing.

And then I see the picture as I had not yet read TFA.

But a generation of young weirdos was paying attention.

Count me in as one of those super weirdos. Most kids definitely didn't watch the shows I did, nor did they get the shows or jokes when I watched them. I had exactly zero friends that could really sit through an MST3K movie. And though I'm still a total weird kid, at least now people around my age (mid 20's) and older will look at my MST3K tattoo and freak out and start quoting movie lines AT me. So at least I know there are other weirdos out there!

I fondly remember David Grohl's interview. He's someone that gets it. A phrase that was often said in my house, "We do not actually fight foo. We are the foo fighters." Yes I say it anytime his music comes on.

I LOVED the awkward silences and the glances, and the totally not responding in interviews thing. There was also something just so great on creating comedy with a low budget on stuff that's just, actually, truly, funny! I was raised on this show, Dr. Katz, and MST3K. So that's definitely fed my enjoyment of comedy now, including a lot of British humor (which loves those awkward silences) and funny arrogant characters and bits (such as Jimmy Pardo and his show Never Not Funny.) Not to mention Invader Zim, Adventure Time, and Comedy Bang Bang.....

My dad and I share a brain, and will finish each other's jokes and sentences with a variety of lines from these various shows that I was raised on. We often ended actual arguments with, "Let's just argue for two more minutes" from Dr. Katz. Plus my husband enjoys a lot of the same shows and we'll point to things by saying, "Now I'm LEERING at it." - Also Dr. Katz. My dad and I freaked out my step-mom by jumping into the "Johnny LongTorso" song from MST3K when she mentioned that someone had a "long torso." We sang the whole thing and she just stared at us.

Anndd now I have volumes 1 - 3 of SGC2C in my Amazon cart. Anyone know if there's a reasonable price on volumes 4 or 5?

In 2002, I produced and 'hosted' a weekly college radio show made entirely of underground and obscure rap intercut with samples from (mostly) Space Ghost. The show's fake sponsor was, of course, The Old Kentucky Nightmare Talk Show and Liquor Corporation (from the amazing Willie Nelson episode, IIRC). My goal was to create mixtapes of the music I was listening to, with nearly all transitions sampled from SGC2C in a way that made the dialogue relevant to the music.

To this day, the 30 or so 90 minute mixes I made are among the things I am most proud of creating. My artistic peak, so to speak, and I will never top that period in my creative life.

Thanks, Space Ghost and Zorak!

I think this show has really suffered from not having easily accessible clips on Youtube to the extent of other shows. I'm guessing that's a copyright issue? For example, when I search for "Batmantis" I find a bunch of clips, but in Spanish.

I wanted to show my daughter the hypnotism episode (mainly because it's fun to try and train a 3-year old to chant "Lombaki creo plomo plio zona, ah ah!") and I had to break out the DVD.

Back in the olden days of the Internet, I was a regular on the AOL SG:CtC message board. After the Timothy Leary episode, another user criticized the show, complaining (somewhat self-righteously) that Dr. Leary was not an appropriate guest for a kid's show, what with his history of psychedelic drug advocacy and all.

I defended the show, mentioning that its audience was older viewers, and that since it ran at 10:00pm, most kids wouldn't be up to see it, and that even if they did, Dr. Leary's recreational experiments were not even mentioned during the show.

Next thing I know, I got a personal email from the show's creators, thanking me for my post, and offering to send me some swag. They sent a Cartoon Network t-shirt, and even better, a CD of the SG:CtC theme music! The t-shirt has long been worn to threads, but the CD is still in rotation on my playlist.

Thanks again, Space Ghost team!

"Cringe comedy" is very apropos. It's also one of the reasons we got rid of our regular TV. Between that, and the never-ending parade of syndicated sitcoms, there was literally nothing on.

I suppose I over-gorged on the latter all through my childhood, and what replaced it (uncomfortable faux-real comedies and bizarre genre mashups, or hateful anti-hero violence dramas) never appealed.

Admittedly, I am no longer in any demographic that TV producers think they want. I mean, Adult Swim seemed pretty much in the low attention span, awake at 3am, young male stoner category.

But it was the cringe part that sealed the deal for me. If I wanted to be uncomfortable, I can do that without TV for free a great many ways.

Sooooooooooooooolo

This show wasn't just cringe comedy, as many of the guests were in on it. It was the start of that short attention span absurdist theater stuff that infected much of Adult Swim, from Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law to Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Hell, the punchline of the Ant episode was Space Ghost having a stare down with a giant ant in silence for minutes before shouting "yoursonisamoron!" And cut.

Yeah, it can't be cringe comedy because I have extremely low tolerance for that, and I loved Space Ghost Coast to Coast. It was more anti-comedy, a sort of comic dada that appealed viscerally to people who came of age when you had to dial up to get on the pre-Internet walled gardens. Like the episode where he spends ten minutes following an ant. It's funny because of the pure absurdity, but it's not sustained comedy. It starts and stops being funny through the sheer repetition.

"Such beautiful girl hair"

I'm not sure I totally agree with "cringe comedy" either. I like the "anti-comedy" or comic dada label graymouser suggested upthread because similarly I cannot take cringe comedy but Space Ghost was one of my favorite shows.

I think honestly this has become a huge part of internet aesthetic all the way down to 'weird twitter' (e.g. @dril), starting from SGC2C to things like Tim and Eric, Great Job! as discussed in the article. It's shitposting at its finest, which really is dada (when talking specifically about tumblr, shitposting (where I think the term originated) is not to be confused with 'nightblogging', which is more a form of surrealism).

Honestly, being a kid and being the only person I knew who could tolerate this let alone think it was hilarious (except my brother who, honestly, I think I dragged into it), I would have never thought it would become this prominent. But I think it was becoming clear once Aqua Teen Hunger Force was well established (commence the jigglin'!)

Anyway I'm glad I was there to see it and I'm glad my brother joined in when I'd just start yelling I'M DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY 40 IN MY BIG OLD PICKUP TRUCK when we had to ferry vehicles between one field and another.

I'm sick and feeling crappy today but I found the entirety of season 3 on youtube so guess what I'm doing today.

(also I'm really glad Home Movies got a brief mention because that is a similar favorite--improvised dialogue always, for me, creates something amazing)

I'm way out of the absurdist cartoon loop, and mostly have been forever (I don't even own a), but I will never not love this show. I have to concur that it's not really "cringe comedy" in the same way that, say, something like The Office was. Or even, for that matter, Seinfeld, to point at something more contemporary in feel. Everybody involved knew the proceedings were ridiculous. Everybody in the audience knew they were being fucked with. The whole joy of the show was in the dynamic between being in on the joke and not being sure how far into total time-wasting inanity the joke was going to get driven.

That ant-following episode. I thought I was going to crack a rib.

(I wasn't ever stoned back then, but I'll cede that SG:C2C fandom was probably just about as good a predictor of my future stoned-ness as anything.)

Three hams will kill him is, admittedly, great. But BPTBSSB...

It contains Freddie Prinze Jr. singing along with Brak to Highway 40 Revisited. It has the Chieftains singing with Brak. The Great Grape Ape sings about a giant squid in his fridge. There's Ohio, Barbeque, Molly Cule, Magic Toenail... practically every moment is brilliant.

But then there's With freedom comes nudity. oho! About has to be my absolutely favorite television/film quote of all time. One of the best gifts I've ever received was a video from a friend who took one of Dubya's speeches and replaced every instance of the word "freedom" with the word "nudity". The end of the clip was the scene in Braveheart where Mel Gibson screams freedom, only she replaced him screaming"freedom" with nuuuuuuuuuuuuudity!. And then it cut to all his friends closing their eyes, the king dying, and ending with the drawn and quartering manager guy shaking his head. It was hilarious.

Those two and Kentucky Nightmare were quote mine gold. I'm not sure I said anything in my last semester of college that wasn't partly referring to one of those episodes.

Adult Swim is also interesting to me because I experienced it along with a shift of how media was shared. Like, I had VHS tapes of the times when Adult Swim ran a marathon (there was a New Year's one that we re-watched probably half a dozen times). But we'd also find the episodes in low-res videos people shared on our college's unofficial network (which was, literally, people sharing parts of their hard drives via WIndows 98/2000/XP networking). So it kind of was the thing where I saw the shift from analog to digital sharing. (And lest anyone get on their high horse, there was no physical way to have bought the episodes for years after that, and when it was possible I did.)

borborygmi, I loved those old Council Of Doom homepages, and I'd make a FPP about them if they still existed on the internet. Here's a classic exchange from the linked site:

BRAK: Hello, Mr. Hand Towel Puppet!!! You smell like feet.
HAND TOWEL PUPPET: Hello, Brak. We finally meet. There's so much to tell you but the most important thing is... you should know that the rest of them condescend to you. You must escape and find your truth path in life.
BRAK: You sure do know a lot of big words for a towel!!
HAND TOWEL PUPPET: Brak, listen to me. The others, especially Space Ghost, treat you like a... a... pet.
BRAK: I found a walrus with a toe infection and Space Ghost says I can't keep him.
HAND TOWEL PUPPET: BRAK!!! PAY ATTENTION! YOU ARE JUST A FOIL--
BRAK: Hey, I like burned jelly. What were you saying, Mr. Hand Towel Puppet?
HAND TOWEL PUPPET: Nevermind, Brak.

Mr. Hand Towel Puppet was sad and didn't want to talk so I used him as a wig and danced around in the shower like Jennifer Lopez until Space Ghost came in and yelled at me.

Eek, eek says the panda.

I inflicted SGC2C on a few friends upon whom I later inflicted Stella. The reaction was pretty much the same after the first episode each time. "I don't know what the hell that was." "So, you didn't like it." "Wait, do you have more? Play the next one."

But yes. LIVING WITH YOU IS LIKE LIVING IN A LIVING NIGHTMARE.

Also I always ask the cats if they're getting enough oxygen.

I'm late with this, but hope it will not go unseen.

Tom Roche is an Atlanta TV editor / producer who was part of the SGC2C team. He recently put together this fantastic compilation of "slates", the short video that would precede the actual show on each show tape they produced. It serves as an excellent introduction to the inanity and scope of the show.

Atlantans, his documentary on Alley Pat airs on PBS next week. Set your DVRs!

We do "knifing around" a lot in my house and my kids say "cut cut cut cut cut" even though they don't get it.

LEGO Damashii: "Back in the olden days of the Internet, I was a regular on the AOL SG:CtC message board.

Oh, I still have the second set, but I have personally autographed photos of Brak, Zorak, and Tad. I had been corresponding with them during the heavy Scooby days and trying to get them to do more other stuff, so they sent me some photos. Later, they got damaged due to my ex-wife's fetish for bleach during cleaning (and fumes thereof). She emailed them with a funny email about how they had been damaged, and I couldn't eat for all the weeping and wouldn't sleep, and they sent a second set (which are now framed).

Ok, so you morons actually made me go look at stuff and I actually found out that the [Adult Swim] App for iOS actually has non-stop 24/7 streaming channels on it that you can sit and watch cartoons for free on. One channel is nothing but Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast. Another channel is Non-stop Venture Brothers.

I am now happy with the future.

The Ruki family frequently narrates our lives to the tune of Smells Like Cartoon Planet. Kid Ruki has never actually seen Space Ghost, but I guess this is what happens when one is literally born into it.
