The Jefferson Grid (SLIG)

A little more explanation of why these squares are such cool squares can be found in the times.

Some of my favorites are the ones where a small town fits inside the square, but is oriented at a different angle. Also this one that looks EXACTLY like someone just spent about 8 minutes in Cities Skylines creating it.

I've been following this insta for a while now. So cool to see all the different variations on the theme, and how natural and anthropogenic factors interact to define these squares of Earth.

The first thing that popped into my head when I looked at that last link was the opening to Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

I wish there were links to the google maps or something just for more viewing of the underlying bits/pieces..

Well, to be pedantic, Chicago Midway International Airport no longer quite fits in exactly one square mile. If you look at the road on the right hand side (eastern side) of the airport, Cicero Avenue, you can see how it significantly curves to the east one block to allow for a runway extension and the rebuilt terminal building, then curves back. This was done in 1967. Since it cuts over one block, running along what would be Keating Ave along 5100W, (Cicero proper is 5200W) that's 1/8th a mile wide, by basically 5/8th a mile long, extra space outside the former exact one square mile of the airport.

Chicago streets, for the most part, are 1/8th a mile apart, which is also 100 numbers on the address grid. Major streets appear every 400 numbers, or 1/2 mile apart. The effect of this at night is the city is lit up graph paper, with major lines every 1/2.

So, you can see the Jefferson Grid in Chicago, all lit up at night.

I saw this a while ago and was so taken with it, and now so pleased to see it here. It's a good idea for a project and nicely done.
