Carey Lander, keyboardist for Scottish indie band Camera Obscura, has passed. Carey died of Sarcoma, and she asked everyone to give for those who would come after. She was 33.

Shit, I don't follow music news so didn't know a thing about this. What a lovely sound that band had.

Fuck cancer.
I first heard them only a year ago, but I fell immediately in love with Camera Obscura's sound: lush, yearning, beautiful—but also grounded, sly and full of wit. I've never managed to catch the band live, but from the tour footage, documentaries and music videos I've seen, Carey was a huge part of that. May she rest in peace.

Such incredibly sad news. Sarcoma is a terrible thing, and though Carey was much too young herself, tragically it also affects children disproportionately.
If anyone is considering donating, I know a friend of Carey's who recently did some work with Sarcoma UK and has nothing but good things to say about them. They're a small team doing great work to help sufferers and their families, on very little resources. There are a lot of calls on your donating dollar, but if you feel moved to help by this, they'd be a good recipient.

Thanks for the reminder of the Super Trouper cover, rongorongo. I can't believe I'd forgotten about that. They had performed it the one time I saw them, and stopped the crowd in its tracks. Such a great show, too -- for a band known for being lush and melodic, they sure rocked the fuck out that night.

Not going to say much except that she moved on the periphery of my social circle and the news hit us hard despite me only knowing her as a friend-of-a-friend (of sorts). It's really hit home for a lot of people around here.
Carey was stylish as fuck - that was my first memory of her. She was shy and kept to herself, but you could not take your eyes off her. Beautifully styled hair and makeup and on-point outfit - but her sense of style always felt natural and innate. And she was gracious, funny, smart, and seriously didn't have time for jerks.
We talked about sewing, mostly. Sewing and customising vintage dresses.
And she was talented. So talented.
Goddamn cancer sucks. 33 years old. It so sucks.

And it feels really weird talking about all this, because this is not my loss - just a lot of people I know are very subdued and quiet at the moment.
But really, she was awesome and cool. And cancer sucks, so go donate if you can to her fund.

Mod note: Just noting that I pulled the active fundraising link from the post; totally understandable good intentions there but it's something we need to be pretty firm about.

Camera Obscura sustained me through an episode of depression. Sad she had to go so young.
