THIS IS NOT A DRILL

Netflix will be making four 90-minute Gilmore Girls episodes, written by series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. Lorelai, Rory, Emily, and Luke are expected to return.

Sherman-Palladino left the show before the final season and has said it was not what she would have done with the characters. The possibility of a reunion had been floated by Scott "Luke" Patterson, which he walked back during a reunion panel this summer.

We still miss you, Richard.

I have never seen the show, but many of my favorite people love it, so I'm sure it's charming. I might even watch this. But I will forever think of this as the show that made it okay for Rory to be a nickname for Lorelei. This makes me feel old and out of touch, shaking my cane while protesting that Rory is a boy's name.

Pleeeeeeease don't let it include any arc involving Lorelai royally screwing up her relationship with Luke again. My heart is weak as is, I don't think I'd survive it if that happened.

Yay! So many of my friends are gonna be thrilled. However, what about the rest of Stars Hollow? I greatly enjoyed the bizarreness of small town politics that were very well represented in that show.

If you haven't watched the original series in a while and want more than 360 minutes of new Gilmore Girls, you can slow down the playback and extend your viewing time, while increasing your comprehension of the dialog.

Can I be really selfish and demand a combined GG/Parks and Rec/Northern Exposure revival so all my favorite eccentric small-town characters could come back AND meet each other?

Luke and Fleischman, Maurice and Ron Swanson, Lorelai and Leslie Knope ...

As someone who has never seen either show, I've just realized that every time I've read anything about The Gilmore Girls, I've mentally substituted The Golden Girls. I've just now figured out that they are in fact two separate things that I don't know anything about, and not, as I had supposed, one single thing that I don't know anything about. Thank you for your kind attention and I will let myself out.

Oh my goodness, I've missed Stars Hollow, Kirk, Michel, etc. (much more than the principal characters, tbh, although I'm fond of them too). There had better be a goodly portion of MANDATORY SAM PHILLIPS on board.

Well it might not be what you get, but I'm not going to let something trivial like a complete lack of textual support stop me. Rory/Paris 4 Eva.

The absolute best part of all of this is that as far as I have heard, all Netflix is really doing is market research into under-served niches and delivering content right to them. They can afford to produce equivalent-to-TV broadcast content, but without the risks or costs of having limited time slots. If one of these revivals fails (like Arrested Development sorta did, and probably others I don't remember or didn't even hear of.) they don't lose out on another, possibly more popular show, and they can afford the risk of giving more control to the creators. This all applies to their original programming as well, even more so when it come to the niche market focus and ability to risk more original content (Bojack Horseman is emblematic of that to me.).

Netflix is actually pretty exciting right now as a way to produce content, not just distribute it. Feels weird to like it though. Data mining to the rescue?

Rory is a boy's name

She actually preceded Rory Gilmore so I never got too het up about this. I actually wondered if that was on purpose--good patrician New England and all.

(FWIW, I also know a female Rory but it's short for Aurora, which makes more sense than Lorelai. I always supposed that "Rory" was based on a baby pronunciation.)

NorthernLite: Can I be really selfish and demand a combined GG/Parks and Rec/Northern Exposure revival ….?

This would be best shown simultaneously, in rented theaters, nation-wide.

For myself, just a Gilmore Girls + Northern Exposure cross-over would be enough. There would now be two bustling cafes but still only one radio station in the combined town; Star's Hollow would benefit form the addition of moose; and Alaska could be relieved of the dumb Anthony-Edwards-as-Mike-Monroe rathole. Heck, Shelly Tambo could apply to college!

(Also: eponymousterical?)

"All I want is for Emily Gilmore to become a later-in-life lesbian." From (of course) the Toast

I have to think that Amy Sherman-Palladino's endgame for the show gives more attention to and resolution for the Lorelei/Emily relationship.

Season seven finally resolves the Luke/Lorelei tension, but that's so much less interesting and central to the concept of the show, to me. Luke isn't a Gilmore OR a Girl, and we've seen that kind of "will they/won't they" suspense on a million other shows. Of course they will... eventually.

But Emily absolutely is one of the Gilmore Girls, and "can Lorelei and her mother ever repair their relationship?" was part of the premise of the show, and not... Totally resolved, to me. I kinda want to see Lorelei voluntarily invite Emily over for dinner with no prospect of monetary returns, and I want to see Emily come and eat at Lorelei's kitchen table and laugh.

One of the unsettling delights of the short-lived Bunheads was having Kelly Bishop play the complete opposite of Emily Gilmore. It was great!

"All I want is for Emily Gilmore to become a later-in-life lesbian."

Roseanne did that story line already. The Toast's imaginary script could practically be quotes from some of those Roseanne episodes.

(Edited to add -- I love the Toast. I just also like Roseanne.)

What I loved about that was, well, everything. But specifically, I loved that she had that same sort of "I'm in charge" imperiousness of Emily, but in the character of a California bohemian dancer (which is apparently closer to who Kelly Bishop is in real life). My personal headcannon is that she's Emily's bohemian twin sister that we never hear about because she scandalized the family by running off to New York to become a dancer and wound up on a commune in California.

Bunheads was tragically short-lived.

Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, I am so excited for this! I recently introduced my husband to Gilmore Girls and it's become his favorite Netflix binge. When I first watched the show, I was Rory's age, looked like Lane, and lived in California (where the show was actually filmed), and now I'm Lorelai's age, live in CT, and my husband works at Yale. Guys, I can't even begin to tell you how weird my life seems when viewed through nostalgic Stars Hollow glasses.

My only direct, first-hand experience with the Gilmore Girls involves a trip to the movie store. In the depths of sleepless nights with an infant, my wife was binge watching almost anything to help her get by. One fine day in sunny Toronto I found myself at the hipster movie rental place nearby, sheepishly slipping a couple of Gilmore Girls DVDs across the counter to a youngster that raised an eyebrow when he saw the title.

"It's for my wife," was all I could manage to say.

Scene: Etrigan is hanging out at the U.S. base near Basrah, with a fellow soldier who's barnstorming around Iraq with his Special Forces team. Major Badass and I go way back, so I've heard most of his stories before, but none of the people in my unit have, so he's enjoying a Cuban cigar and regaling the younger troops with Tales Of War (many of which are true). The talk winds down, and I ask him whether he caught up with the last season of Gilmore Girls. A few other people laugh, and Major Badass pins them down with a glare.

"Best goddamn show on television," he rasps, taking another long hit from the cigar. "Now that Buffy the Vampire Slayer's off the air."
