That was interesting. And makes me terrified to walk near paint shops.

Loved thinking of the amount of work that went into this to make it just right, lining up the models in the exact same places both clothed and nude to reveal them. The final effect was pretty cool. I'd be curious how it would look if they reversed it too - painting on clothes?

Like most paints, this was a solid film.

I was reading the comments on the Vimeo page trying to figure out how it was done, kitteh, wherein someone managed to work in a transphobic comment. SMDH. WTF. Sighs.

Anyway, I think it has to do with filming them twice maybe? Once naked, once clothed, then using chroma key channels to "bleed" the image through?

yea, annika, that's it exactly. part of my job is greenscreen compositing and this it hilarious!!!!

in a compositing program you are able to sample a colour, and then get it to replace everything that shade with a different image. it's very simple to move the second image so that the two filmed plates line up perfectly, and it looks like the liquid is removing the clothing.

I'll be honest, this would have been much better if they had gone with underwear instead of nudity for the chroma footage. It would be easier to share, not to mention easier to focus on the effect rather than wondering about the weird accidental metaphor that is somebody spitting another person's genitals into the open.

That's not even coming from a place of prudeness; I think baps and wangs are a cost-effective way to add zest to almost any occasion. You've got to be smart in the deployment, though.

That won't work for vegetarians, though; they'll need to stick with the usual spices and pepper.

Seriously though the normalization of male nudity is a bit of a hobbyhorse of mine and I love to see it in a non-sexual, non-creepy context.

Ooh, I want to do this with flayed subjects and go from clothing to skin to musculature.

What? Why is everyone looking at me like that?

The video for "Toe Jam," a song from Brighton Port Authority (aka Norman Cook, best known as Fat Boy Slim), sung by David Byrne, with a breakdown by Dizzee Rascal, features a load of nude people whose genitalia and women's breasts, as well as a few raised middle fingers, are being censored by the traditional black bars/dots. The actions in the video, though, are made to create effects from the bars/dots. The video would be a series of attractive naked (and, given the general 1970s look of the people and clothes, probably very hairy) people doing truly inexplicable party games if the black cutouts weren't there. Enjoyable, sure, but nothing special.

That's naked Norman Cook at about 2:30, doing a helicopter with a very big black bar indeed.

It would have really pulled me out of the effect. How the heck would the liquid wet the outerclothes without wetting the underwear?

I, too, would like to throw my support behind more normalization of male nudity, especially when intact penises are involved.

They managed it partway through the video, in the lineup with the three dudes, so it is possible at least.

Cool effect, but I ended up kind of hung up on the lack of lady pubes.

Did the lady pubes do something wrong? Did they somehow upset the director? Maybe they showed up to set late or refused to leave their trailers?

But what happens if one's tackle is normally that shade of green anyway?

There are a number of possibilities: Your friend should see a doctor, and get a referral for a sorcerer of some kind to cure the ogre curse, or maybe an oncologist and some anger management therapy.

Then I'd advise not going fishing in the Chicago River on St. Patrick's Day; the fish would never see your lure.

Which of course explains why none of the clothes they're wearing have any green in them prior to the paint slinging. It also looks like they chose lighter colours, greys and pastels. Presumably the software finds it easier when there is a starker contrast.

Relax, you can treat that easily by using a different colour paint for your chromakey.

But his underwear was more distracting since everyone else had their wangs out.

Also, should I have added a WANGS warning? I was trying to support griphus' new world order.

(For what it's worth, there's no need at all to avoid the keyed out color in the background layer. The chromakey only gets applied to the clothed foreground images.)
