This is one of those appropriately weird pairings that is either going to be amazing or a very interesting failure, so either way it'll be worth it.

I didn't know Heavy Metal was still around. I really liked it as a teenager, but haven't seen it in years.

It would make me so happy to see Heavy Metal return to its heyday. I would get a subscription and keep the issues as a payload for my children.

I will reserve judgment, but I will also remain hopeful that it won't suck.
Alas, even Metal Hurlant couldn't maintain a market the second time, so I'm wondering where a large format print mag can go these days.
But if they start getting Gaiman quality stories in there...

I'm disappointed he made no mention of the psychedelic results of the crazy-bad translations in the early issues. The fractured English of the initial versions of the Druillet and Moebius stories invested them with a powerful strangeness. Dada, result of the pitiless mechanisms of international capitalism, and somehow akin to the curious English aphorisms seen on some Japanese logo wear.
He does seem to be interested in bringing back the weird unknowable clamp thing, clearly a step in the right direction.

Heavy Metal was one of the first things I read that helped me define misogyny. Please, no more sexy wasteland women in refrigerators.

OK, so you've told us what the translations got right, when are you going to tell us what they got wrong?
(Maybe it's just my incomplete grasp of French, but the Druillet and Moeibuis stories I've read haven't made complete sense to me in the original either. Not that there's anything wrong with that, necessarily....)

Everybody on this thread- seriously, everybody- should check out the Brandon Graham & Emma Rios-edited Island magazine published by Image. For one thing, it contains (sporadically anyway) the continuation of Graham's very Eurocomics Multiple Warheads; other stories like Simon Roy's Habitat are like the Heavy Metal comics I always imagined from descriptions of the magazine's classic era before scans and reprints were available. And Rios's ID! Great, great stuff.

bfields, I'm not sure there ever were any more accurate translations of the Druillet, which is absolutely obtuse even in French. the Moebius stuff was well-translated for the late 80s Epic Moebius books, and I believe they remain the standard translations today. The weirdness of the HM translations was certainly part of their original appeal, for me; however, the later translations of the Moebius material didn't really take away from the power of the work that I recall.
There were also issues with the repro in some of the translated works, if I recall correctly - partial plate exposures of the original lettering or SFX and so forth. I don't think there's any question that this was a result of hurried and budget-constrained work, but this also only added flavor and texture to the material as far as I was concerned.

To be fair, it's pretty fantastic, as is the quality of his anatomy in general (IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN). But it's also really well-drawn, weird fetishy porn. Whether you're into that or not is up to you. I quite like it, but it's probably not everyone's cup of tea.
