Four Months Hand-Cutting A Paper Microbe
November 5, 2015 5:35 AM   Subscribe

“Cut Microbe” is a sculpture entirely hand cut out of paper. Measuring 44 inches/112cms in length, it is half a million times bigger than the ecoli bacteria upon which it is based. I wanted to create a sculpture that reflected in the process of being made the incredible scale and complexity of this microbiological world. I am amazed at the strange beauty of the natural world and wanted to open people’s eyes to aspects of it that they rarely see. -Rogan Brown

That's amazing and I also want to see pictures of the scissors they used.

That is stunning. I'd love to see film of some of the process.

Given the incredible abundance of bacteria everywhere on Earth, the chances are there an ecoli bacterium somewhere on this sculpture - probably just hangin' out, rollin' up another joint with some friends. And sometime soon, he'll turn to a buddy and say, "Hey, do you every think, like, maybe we're just living on an even bigger bacterium, that's like - I dunno ... [considers the freshly rolled joint in his flagellum] ... but it's, like, made out of paper? Oh man I just blew my mind!"

My point here is: what are the chances that I am actually living on a giant sculpture of an IDIOT that is made out of BOOZE??? I woulda asked "MeAsk" this question but the mods are all: "go home kid, you're quidrunk". Fucken MODS, amirite? I'm FINE to drive a computer whadda complainin' about anyway.

Yeah, I don't know about 'beautiful' but it looks convincingly like something that would make you ill. 'Mephitic'?

Four Months Hand-Cutting A Paper Microbe

I suspect that if I attempted such a project, hand-cutting is exactly what would ensue.

Much more here, the artist's own site.

Some of them exhibit a bit of a Georgia O'Keefe moteefe.

Here's the artist posing with Ron Wood of the Undead Stones.

I can't remember the last time I posted a comment on the Blue, but wow. This is amazing, and I am in love. I could stare at this for hours.

The "Magic Circle" piece on his site looks like a big pile of elderflowers. It's a remarkably fluffy texture to achieve from planes of paper.

As it turns out, I started reading this just as I finished a burrito from Chipotle.

Not scissors - here's a short video with the artist.
