In case anyone's worried: it was an unmanned rocket, and NASA reported no injuries from the incident. Enjoy the fireworks.

also, this previous post is one of my favorite in all of MeFi history, specifically recreating real life space flight.

Jebidiah, you will be missed. (At least until you respawn.)

I bought a whopping fistful of Orbital stock two days after that accident and now it's up 50%. Thanks, Kuznetsov Design Bureau!

Was wondering if there was any follow up to this. Had the family outside looking towards the launch area, with the live-stream playing on a laptop. Camera on tripod ready for the long-exposure shot and everything. Kids were bummed that it blew up ("why'd it blow up dad, what happened, ...").

Wow, beautiful photos. I felt like the "agony of defeat" bit from Wide World of Sports should have been playing as I checked out the photos.

The FPP of the launch failure includes one of my favorite comments ever.

In case you missed it, here was the view of the explosion from multiple remote video cameras set up near the launch pad.

While Orbital (now Orbital ATK) is updating the Antares rocket with newer (less explodey) engines, the next couple of Cygnus resupply vehicles will instead launch on ULA Atlas V rockets out of Canaveral; next launch on December 3rd.

Beautiful. Here's a link to a Saturn rocket launch...not an explosion but backwards and very trippy.

If you're gonna blow something up in my bay, do it right.

After all, you've got big shoes to fill.

Here's a direct link to NASA's photo set on Flickr, where Gizmodo got the shots but without any interstitial blog advertisements to get in the way.

I disagree with NASA's findings, and conclude based on my photo analysis that this rocket had an insufficiency of both boosters and struts.

A pair of explosions decimated the rocket, the second one releasing the force of 200 tons of TNT.

Think you used enough dynamite there, Butch?

Images of exploding technology? I would caution you, the computer fairies tend not to look well upon such hubris.

I am well acquainted with the hubris of exploding rockets -- the cover of my Programming Logic textbook was a series of photos of Arienne V exploding due to an typecasting overflow. I can't find a picture on amazon, but apparently the Second Edition does list on Amazon at 500 dollars, so I probably should have kept it...
