Atlanta Loses Its Greatest Listener

Cliff Kuhn, Executive Director of the Oral History Association and long-time advocate for civil rights and labor history in the South, has passed away.

Kuhn was a vocal proponent of public history; the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that "Kuhn was a regular voice on local radio, particularly on WABE, for which he created the 'This Day in History' monthly broadcast. Kuhn also participated in earlier award-winning radio documentary projects, 'Living Atlanta' and 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken.'”

Among his published works are Contesting the New South Order: The 1914-1915 Strike at Atlanta's Fulton Mills, Living Atlanta: An Oral History of the City, 1914-1948, and Like a Family: The Making of a Southern Cotton Mill World.

I learned about this through our recently retired local Morning Edition host who was friends with him and had a regular segment with Kuhn. Cliff was on WABE more times than I can count, giving history lessons on the radio with a great conversational tone. I never met the man, but I am going to miss his voice.

I took classes from him. I saw him in the hallway earlier this semester. I was about to email him about a project I'm helping with.

I keep trying very hard not to cry every time I think about his smile or his voice.
