Robots that are Shitty

Reddit has a section devoted to robots that are shitty.

This is not about Japanese toilets, or robots that have feces on them. It is just broken, or ineffective, or otherwise "shitty" robots.

Here are some recent highlights:

A robot mouth that is not very successfully learning to talk.
A robot in a battle/competition that gets hoist on its own petard.
Ineffective nail hammerer.

There's plenty more, poke around. This is part of the larger "shitty network" on Reddit - Shitty Car Mods, Shitty Watercolour, Shitty Kickstarters... whatever you are into, there are curators collecting the shittiest stuff for you.

There was a great age of invention around the mid 1800's through the 1940's/50s. The hardware, machined steel, bolts, small electrical and gas engines were available and small factories could work economically. My Grandfather built amazing custom systems for the sorting of daffodil bulbs for instance (omfg I wish I had videos).

We just may be entering the age of small custom devices that are actually useful. Big runs like the Roomba and small one or a few custom bots that are not hundreds of thousands of dollars but economically feasible for a particular use. Should be an amusing period of wacky inventors!

The tinderizer is amazing and is exactly what I imagine is on the other side of most social media interactions.

Poor robots are trying their best, and here we are calling them names. I am sorry, robots. I appreciate your robotic efforts.

I worked with Nao in college, as part of a robot soccer team and let me tell you. Bipedal motion is rough.

My favorite has got to be the tooth brushing helmet. It was so great, or, er shitty that Vice did an entire piece on its creator, Simone Giertz.

Put 25 of those robot mouths in a room with the volume on high, then try to have a conversation with another person. It's Twitter!

Also, that Tinder-bot is the most hilariously obscene thing I've ever seen. It's perfect. It's the apotheosis of social media.

I found the cheese tower robot video before checking the comments. I was all about to praise its non-shitty construction skills — look at those perfect swirls! — and then the program just ended abruptly and everything turned into a pile of sadness and nitrogen cheese farts.

i laughed so hard at robot mouth i scared a man and three cats

but then i read some of the comments and felt bad for it. It's doing its best; no need to compare it to a Fleshlight.

And you're going to make us click through all the links ourselves to find it?

there's a robot that dials into my workplace every so often. every time i answer there's a brief pause before it simply says, "I'm sorry, I'm having problems right now. Goodbye."

i like to think that's its actual intended purpose because to be honest I think it's rather charming. I hope it's ok though. i think about that robot a lot.

I had the same reaction to the cheese tower: "why this is just fine, actually almost perfect ... oh dear ...... oh dear, oh dear". I immediately thought about writing a beautiful C++ template but forgetting that one last closing delimiter, and now, in the compiler's eyes, it's no better than "lkasjdf;ja;sdflkjsad;lfksjdf" and you get 5,000 lines of error messages.
