Talking turkey with some helpful hotlines

The Turkey Hotline Exists and Here is Everything You Need to Know About It - well, it's six key facts about the Butterball's Turkey Talk-Line, including that it started in 1981, and a reminder that it was featured in The West Wing. To make your references a bit more current, here's Stephen Colbert's call to the hotline this year and part two. Butterball's not the only game in town - you can also contact the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline, or hear a pre-recorded message from Rob Zombie and PETA.

Today.com has some tips from, and insight into, the Butterball Hotline HQ (auto-playing video up top), and lots of odd and funny calls have been shared online, if you worry that you're inquiry will be too strange.

And if you're wondering, here's the NPR piece Colbert referenced when talking about misleading turkey labeling.

I scrubbed my raw turkey with a toothbrush dipped in bleach for three hours. Is that enough to kill the harmful bacteria?

Another source for solutions: Food52's 99 Thanksgiving Problems (and solutions) includes the option to ask your questions and get a timely response via their comments field. So far, comments are appropriate.

I'm sorta curious why Colbert talks to Nicole, Shannon, Janice, and Chef Tony. Do Nicole, Shannon and Janice not have any credentials? Did they have to gin up some credentials for Tony in order to make it credible that a man would know something about cooking turkey?

One of the links above points out that the hotline only got its first male expert (and even then only one out of fifty) in 2013, so this is entirely possible.

Unfortunately, I fear the Butterball hotline may see an increase in crank calls this year, thanks to Colbert. In addition, the lack of a resolution to the Chef Tony story is deeply unsatisfying.

hear a pre-recorded message from Rob Zombie and PETA.

Not a knock on this post by any means, but that is so far down the list of things I want to do today or any day.
