Jeb! as Marilyn in the Style of Warhol

This week is Art Basel Miami Beach -- the United States' leg of the three-city Art Basel art fair, at which "267 leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa show significant work from the masters of Modern and contemporary art, as well the new generation of emerging stars." Also in attendance will be scores or hundreds of exceptionally well-heeled art collectors, plus three US presidential apsirants.

With so much significant art for sale (last year's offering was about $3 Billion worth), and so many significant deep pockets, it is perhaps unsurprising that the art fair has also attracted presidential candidates with their own expressions to vend. Jeb! Bush's campaign will host an event called "Pop Art, Politics & Jeb" and Hillary Clinton and Martin O'Malley will also be hosting fundraising events during the fair.

If you happen to be in town during the fair, don't miss these can't miss exhibition booths, and these can't miss shows and events, but don't even try to get into these parties. And if you're looking to buy a little something for yourself this holiday season, here's the full list of exhibitors.

i'm so glad i don't have to be there this year. while it's fun to go out on somebody else's cache and credit card, for an artist it is at root, a sublimely alienating affair.

Despite living in Miami for the past eight years, last year was the first time I really did Art Week. I didn't go to the main Basel fair, but four of the satellite fairs that my friends who are artists were able to get me into.

It was amazing, but ultimately WEIRD. The way I described it to my mother was that a giant contemporary art museum popped up in a tent for a week. I've never seen so many Calder mobiles in my life. And there were pieces in mediums that I didn't realize these artists worked in -- like Chagall tapestries. It was really neat.

But unlike a museum -- everyone's out for money. I remember walking by a booth and falling in love with a Dee Magidson piece. It was a really lovely piece of assemblage art and reminded me of Joseph Cornell's work. Cornell is my favorite artist -- I have spent hours looking at those boxes in the Art Institute in Chicago. I spent a long time talking with gallery owner about the piece, the artist, and then she asked me where I was from. And I said I was local and the light in her eyes died. I get it -- I think she thought she had a sale before she realized I was just a tourist, but man -- as someone who mostly views art in museums, it was a weird experience.

On a completely selfish note -- why won't they tell me where these parties are happening so I can avoid being in these places? Last year, it took me five hours for a drive that normally takes 30 minutes to get from dinner with a friend to an art event.

So this is where I bitch about the problem that any time in my life I haven't lived on acreage, there are events nearby that far too many people attend and make normal life for those of us who live here impossible?

At least with this one someone is giving away free ice cream. Never got that from a football game down the street. Maybe I'll go appreciate some of the non-edible art as well, since there is a bunch of shit I can walk to, but I doubt that will actually happen. More likely I'll be sitting at home watching Netflix. Art that doesn't require dealing with other people is art I can appreciate.

Friend of a friend went to this last year and spent 65 grand on a painting of a hamburger. Not my scene I guess.

Today I went to some of the fairs on Miami Beach and heard the following, "But dear, it's only $10,000."

This is why I like my art in museums.

Fight leads to stabbing at Art Basel
“A guy walked up to me and said ‘I thought I saw a performance, and I thought it was fake blood, but it was real blood’,” Fisher said.

She added that another artist named Rudy Perez showed her a photo that he snapped on his cell phone of the incident, showing a woman dressed in white with blood stains on her clothes.
