I once read a peice on Christmas nostalgia and how all the most popular Christmas songs are 50+ years old, but Mariah Carey's song is a good refutation of that notion. It's entirely possible that there was just a period in the mid to late 20th century where nobody was writing good Christmas music.

A couple times through Oscar Peterson's "O Christmas Tree" and I'm good for the year.

Relevant XKCD - the set of songs we hear nonstop on the radio is really frozen in time.

I just listened to that Mariah Carey song from the AVClub link and didn't recognize it at all. Maybe I've just learned to tune out Christmas music so well that nothing from the last thirty years has managed to enter my brain.
