Thanks for sharing- looks like it could be inadvertently hilarious: The SYMBOL Of PUNK is THE SAFETY PIN!! But I'll have to wait til I can check it out on my desktop machine- on mobile when I zoom in to read the tiny text on the scanned pages the header and the social media sharing icons expand to take up the whole screen! Weird design choice? Or is it just me/ my Android phone?

Looking forward to learning the secret to Genuine Punkitudiness! My garbage bags are crying out to be couturised!!

Try this instead. Of course, by 1980 there was a backlash.

This would be a lot funnier if it weren't an almost-accurate description of the crowds at a lot of the gigs I play now. "Don't conform like that, conform like this!"

If you're going to pogo all night long, don't forget your wrap-around girl-watcher glasses.

By the advent of the punk era I was well into parenthood... One of my sons decided that this was the ideal counter-culture persona, obviously designed to prove to Dad that his intent was to live a life of utter punk uselessness.

The joke was on him, I allowed his rebellion, encouraged his rather outlandish fashion, and paid for the supplies he used to paint skulls on the back of his friend's black leather jackets... this led to an interest in art, a degree in film, a amazingly successful career in the movie industry and, if my plan continues to go as charted, his ability to support me in my old age in luxury and comfort.

Final score:

Punk- 0
Dad- 1

That page cracked me up. Were they just using the same template as "Doing the twist with the Beatles"?

Final score:

Punk- 0

I'd guess that would be the score more often than not. I certainly wasn't as outre as I thought I was.

It's hilarious that someone thought a style guide would be useful when the whole ethos of the movement fashion-wise was "Dont tell us what to do!"

Then came the second wave, Green Day & Hot Topic. Way to commodify counter-culture, American Big Business.

Yeah, the safety pin was indeed a most important part of the punk movement.

But the idea you needed a guide for pogoing?

This guide was seemingly utilized by B movie directors well into the 90s to costume any generic street gang that you wanted to menace your protagonists.

PUNK BADGES

Paint old badges, or make stickers for them out of wide masking tape cut into shapes, then letter on your own punkisms. Here are some suggestions: I Am Punk, Punk Power, Thunk Punk, Go Punk Yourself, Anti-Punk, Punk Pop Rocker, Any Punkin Lately? Dance the Punk Stomp! Pogo Anyone? Punk is Funky, Punk 'n Nasty, Super Punk, Hey Ho Punk, Let's Go Punkin... whatever suits you and what you're wearing.
Punk is funky. This is basically what my grandpa would have said if you asked him to come up with "punkisms".

Also, punk punk punk.

I live next to a high school and my favorite thing is seeing the current crop of young punks. I just want to pinch their cute little cheeks. "Who's a tough and scary punk rocker? You are!" I realize now that at 110 lbs and 5'4" I was not as tough looking as I thought. Still I could sleep on the Philly El & Subway half way home and no one ever bothered me.

OK, I was only a kid when punk was in fashion, and back in the 70s zips were also part of the cool punk's look. You could actually buy short zips and then affix them to your trousers to give them the look. One day, I would have been about 8-10 years old, and a big group of us were going to play football on the grass near our houses. We had got as many people as possible who lived around the area between the ages of 7-15. So we go to knock on this guys door, he would have been about 14, and for some reason it is me and a couple of the older guys who were his mates. We knocked and waited and knocked and waited, and were about to give up when he opens the door, having dashed down the stairs. "What took you so fucking long? We thought you weren't home," asks one of the older kids. "Shit, its just you," says the guy. "I thought you were my mum coming home. I was sticking zips on my trousers and had to take them off cause if she catches me I'll get into fucking trouble," says the kid. Dude, that is as punk as you can get!!

Meanwhile the coolest jacket I have ever seen is a grey leather bomber jacket with "PUNK AS FUNK" hand painted in white house paint on the back (worn and created by probably the coolest person I know, the frontwoman of Anarchistwood, herself a grandma now as well I believe).

Strange how it's the little things, eh?

"Mostly, punk rock and fashion sound and look super loud. They are aggressively sexy and visually stimulating ..... 'look at ME, hear ME, I have something to say.' "

Said every straining-to-be-hip magazine/pamphleteer/media outlet about every "youth trend" from Goethe and Young Werther on down the line to the present day.
