The only thing he did that entire year was a cover of "god only knows"? come ON. surely he also put on some eyeliner at least.

Interesting to see that at my age Bowie was assembling the line up for Tin Machine, so he was sort of in comeback mode at my age, too. Neat, if supremely silly little app here.

It's also my birthday and Elvis Presley's (and I'm having a party this Saturday if you can make it to Tallahassee; we're going to make music and get drunk if you're into that).

Sweet, he played Jareth the Goblin King at my age!

They're surprisingly quiet about the coke-fuelled paranoia and freak-outs, so I've got that to feel OK about. Sort of.

He got a tattoo, well whoop-de-doo.

I put in my age and it said at that age he drew his own tattoo and had it tattooed and then I remembered I was actually 46 instead of 44 and now I just kind of hate David Bowie forever and ever.

I like that it has an answer if you input a number greater than 69, but I'm dismayed that it only goes to 120. I mean, I know I'm not going to live that long, but he'll surely make it to 500 or so before he gets bored with this level of reality and jumps to another one.

At my age he was offered and declined a Knighthood. This doesn't make me feel like a complete and utter failure at life. Not at all.

Thanks goodness it only tells you what he did at your age, not EVERYTHING he had done by your age. Else that would indeed be depressing.

He released the album "Let’s Dance", co-produced by Chic's Nile Rodgers. Selling at least 7 million copies, the album became the most commercially successful album of his career.

yeah

well

good for you, David

He got hit in the face by Lou Reed after a dinner in Hammersmith. Took it like a champ.

Something to aspire to, I suppose. Who's the contemporary Lou Reed?

January 8, 2016 is also Roy Batty's incept date, which begs the question: Is David Bowie a replicant? I don't think we can rule it out.

> He formed a new band, "Tin Machine".

I've still got about nine months to go, but all I have to avoid doing to have a better year than David Bowie at my age is not form a new band, "Tin Machine."

My birthday is January 9. I only have two more days to moonwalk before Michael Jackson, but then I have a WHOLE YEAR in which to finagle a way to announce "Best Rhythm & Blues Performance by a Female Artist" at the Grammy's.

Are you kidding? Tin Machine was one of the better things he did after the 1970s.

Apparently I'm the same age prize bull octorok was when he made a comment on MetaFilter about how David Bowie made him feel inadequate.

Since this came on the heels of the adulting thread now I'm sitting here seriously pondering: is David Bowie an adult?

He launched his own internet service provider, "Bowienet". "Bowienet" included its own email accounts, forums, community blogs, interactive chat rooms and first dibs on all Bowie related content. Premium members could also pay to be first in line for tickets, and David Bowie himself engaged with fans in the chatrooms. Some high tech shit!
The thing about Bowienet is that some of its members got VIP tickets for a special show that Bowie did for the BBC. Always regretted not getting an account.

I accidentally clicked it into negative numbers. That's silly, I thought. Lazy programming. But then... it is Bowie. So I told it I was -12yo.

Nothing! Sigh.

Happy birthday Starman!

Hey, saulgoodman, Jan 8 is my birthday too!

Hard to believe that nobody has mentioned in this thread that Bowie's new album ★ (pronounced "black star") is coming out tomorrow. I'm quite looking forward to it. The Atlantic seems to like it.

I think it was bad of him to not play "The Laughing Gnome" on that tour. Come on, Bowie, own it!

Apparently when he was 4 he was known as 'baby Bowie'? How does that work, seeing as Bowie isn't his real name and he only adopted it in the 60s?

He played "Jareth the Goblin King", in the 1986 Jim Henson film "Labyrinth".

Woo! In my circles, that's the most referenced thing he's ever done!

Bowienet was able to send packets back in time, of course, which allowed Baby Bowie to be updated with messages from the future.

To be fair, "God Only Knows" was on the album Tonight, which means that he did record a few other songs that year (including a duet with Tina Turner).

How did I not know that Bowie was in Last Temptation of Christ? Because: what the heck?

(Also: OMG I REMEMBER BOWIENET.)

Today I learned David Bowie and Patti Smith were born within a few days of one another. Pretty wild couple of weeks for the history of rock and roll.

I share a birthday with Mr. Bowie. And Elvis. And Graham Chapman. Also, Roy Batty will apparently be born on January 8th, 2016.

Yeah, I've basically got the best birthday ever. My birthday totally kicks your birthday's ass.

Thanks, HJ. I'm one of the few who will still admit to liking Bono, so that's a pretty good birthday party you've got there, JWB aside. Bowie, Elvis and Chapman could make for a great party, but I'd hesitate before inviting Batty. He tends to get a little head-crush-y during social occasions. (Although he might sense a kindred spirit in Bowie, them both being beautiful sci-fi weirdos and all.)

The new album is out today, and it's good! I'd say it's his best work in a long time and makes me optimistic for some adventerous late-period Bowie in a way that, for example, The Next Day didn't.

I share a birthday with Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee, but considering I still seem to be alive, I think I got the better deal of the date.
