Such a good doge

If you like Shiba Inus, and you like slow-paced videos, you will love this hour-long video of a doge on a leisurely walk through a Japanese village. They visit a temple, stop for some noodles, take some photos, and create some paw print art. No dialogue, only music. No Japanese knowledge required. posted by desjardins (27 comments total) 80 users marked this as a favorite

That dog appears to be giving fucks at the shiba international standard rate of zero per minute. I wish I could be that chill.

SO CUTE. the music is quite maddening though, I would probably mute it and replace it with my own playlist. The BGM is like watching an Animal Planet show on endless repeat.

Lovely video! This appears to be Jindaiji Temple. Looks like a great place to spend an afternoon.

I know it's bad form to comment before watching the video / reading the article, but I just wanted to make a note here so I can remember to start playing this during business calls tomorrow.

I should just leave that channel on all day at work. It's so lovely.

I am a major Doge fan, and as a life-long dog person (my father was deathly allergic to cats and cat hatred was one of the bigotries he tried to pass on to me), I have considered the Shiba Inu 'fad' to be a welcome break from "the cats own the Internet". I have one piece of "Doge Merchandise" (among a bunch of shirts with otters and bunnies and even vegetables... okay, and one cat), and have gotten only positive reactions wearing it, unlike some shirts that just elicit confused expressions.

This is oddly compelling. I watched for nearly 30 minutes, even pausing the video for a bathroom break.

Okay. So this really is quite cool. Sometimes... you just have to watch a dog enjoying itself and giving *null* fucks.

This video is the Mutts Nutts.

The dog laying on its back is too funny.

Can someone explain the foodstuffs (1:56, 40:55)? Or the pamphlet (10:49)?

Can someone explain the foodstuffs (1:56, 40:55)? Or the pamphlet (10:49)?

The things on a stick at 1:56 are dango made from mochi flour wrapped in nori seaweed I think, probably with a soy sauce flavor. Dango are pretty common street food, served both savory and sweet.

The noodles at 40:55 are soba, with the soba broth in the boxy looking thing. I'm not sure what the white stuff in the cup is, my wife (who is Japanese, but even still I think she's wrong here) thinks it's tororo--this white gooey stuff made from "mountain potato"--but I think it's too liquidy and looks like soba broth with shochu, which is a common (and awesome) way to drink it when it's cold.

The thing at 10:49 is omikuji, a fortune you get at these places basically--but see the wikipedia link for a better explanation than I could give.

Oddly enough I've actually been to this place with a (friend with a non-shiba) dog (and a bunch of other folks) and eaten and drank shochu with soba yu at that exact soba joint that person goes to. It was pretty awesome.

Another random fact, which I remember from seeing a ton of his books and merchandise on sale in a kiosk when walking around, is that Shigeru Mizuki lived there a long time so they've kind of adopted him in Chofu. He is famous for the manga GeGeGe no Kitarō. Probably more too, but that's all I'm familiar with.

Random fact that I thought you MeFites would enjoy knowing if you didn't already.

Awesome explanations.

That shiba inu owns the joint in so many ways. I love the multiple visits to lovely fountain gardens and the stops to fill her small green bowl with water so she can take refreshing gulps.

Ha! My dogs do the same little skip-hop to avoid stepping on grates (8:06).

Ugh, I'm in love with this dog's perfect little fur face and how she keeps peering up to check in with her person.

This is my favorite thing about Metafilter. Bringing on the thing that I had no idea I needed, but then my world is better now that it's here. Thank you!
