An African City, frequently described as "Sex and the City meets Americanah," is a web series (ep. 1) that follows five glamorous young women living in Accra, Ghana, who were raised or educated abroad, navigating the pitfalls of life in the modern city -- work, money, housing, men, and the special problems of the "returnee."

Season 2 debuted Sunday.

CNN interview with the creator -- Africa Is A Country on the show, including discussion about showing super-privileged lifestyles -- NPR interviews the producer and creator

The fabulous fashion is all by Ghanaian designers.

Starring:
MaameYaa Boafo as Nana Yaa, an American-raised graduate of Georgetown and Columbia and our protagonist
Esosa E as Ngozi, a Maryland-raised US Aid worker who's religiously conservative
Maame Adjei as Zainab, an entrepreneur born in Sierra Leone and raised in Atlanta
Nana Mensah as Sade, a Ghanian-Nigerian raised in Texas, educated at Harvard Business School, and working at a big bank in Accra
Marie Humbert as Makena, the biracial daughter of a British father and Ghanaian mother who graduated from Oxford Law, worked in a London firm, and came back to Ghana after a divorce

An interview with creator Nicole Amarteifio, who opted to produce her series on the web, rather than on television, so she could show more modern and realistic stories without catering to more conservative broadcasting norms in Africa. Another interview.

But seriously you don't need to read ANY of the links, just watch the show, it's so entertaining.

This has been in my "make a post about this" queue since I watched the first episode but hadn't had time to watch the rest or do it justice. I didn't realize the new season was out, so now I'm behind on TV watching from FOUR continents now.

This is the only context in which "sex in the city but...." would ever get me to watch anything. Thanks!

I put this on my mental to-watch list a few weeks ago, but this got me to sit down and actually watch. This is great!

i never actually watched SATC, but had it diffuse into my consciousness - while i would work in the dining room, Mrs. bitteroldman would watch episode after episode.

While I have my criticisms about the show, I did start to respect it after a while and felt that it deserved more credit and quite enjoyed listening to many of the episodes when I should have been responding to e-mails(*)

I just watched a few minutes for now, and it's quite fascinating - to see the similarities and differences in the "city", their experiences, and their attitudes.

* Please don't tell my wife, though!

I've lived in rural Ghana twice and watching this made me happy. Even as an obruni/yevu, the struggle is real. I can't wait until my son is older and I can take him there to experience Ghana. It's a fabulous country.
