Kate McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiani (joined by Wanda Sykes and Jane Lynch) parody Carol for the Independent Spirit Awards. They also took on Room.

I think this is supposed to be the Room link.

I suppose it probably helps if one has seen the movies (I haven't), but there's a basic gist to hang onto even if you haven't. And, any excuse to watch Kate McKinnon at work is fine by me.

I've seen Carol twice (hooray for a lesbian romance that doesn't end in miserable tragedy!), and Kate's impression of Cate Blanchett's performance is straight-up uncanny. This is a very loving parody.

I thought this was hilarious, but like Fury Road winning all the technical awards last night, seeing this also just makes me want to see Carol again immediately.

Speaking of, this seems like the perfect place to share my favorite Oscar tweet from last night:

EVERYONE: carol was probably boring, right
[clip shows CAROL pulling a gun]
EVERYONE: whoa. we should've seen carol

It took me way too long to realize the Rooney Mara parts are out of the movie.

Totally missed that the first time. It is now 100 times funnier and it was already pretty damn funny.

my favorite independent Spirit Awards was the one where Rainn Wilson was calling out Philip Seymour Hoffman all night which culminated in a no holds barred wrestling match at the end of the ceremony.

By the way, who the hell thought that ham skit was air worthy?

I confused my Kate Mc*s and thought Kumail Nanjiani was making an appearance on the Katering Show (feat. Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan). I don't think the creamed spinach over poached eggs would have gone well there.

It was great even before Lynch and Sykes showed up; it would have been even better if they'd managed to get a few more famous lesbian cameos. Not that there's anything against Lynch and Sykes. The point is, more lesbians.

There's a great podcast with Phyllis Nagy, the screenwriter, here - it seems like getting it made was quite a challenge. One thing that's really cool is she actually knew Patricia Highsmith.

hooray for a lesbian romance that doesn't end in miserable tragedy!

That's one of the things she liked about the story.

It's kind of a weird and misleading clip - I seem to remember a similar thing happened with Joy around the time of the Golden Globes.

Though since Highsmith also wrote the Ripley books Carol IS an honorary part of the Fancy Serial Killer Cinematic Universe.
