This seems like as good a place as any to mention that in a biologically accurate version of Finding Nemo:
If [the female clownfish] is removed, the remaining male turns into a female, and one of the juveniles matures into a male.
Whether the newly mature Nemo ends up having sex with his sex-changed Dad, I don't know.

Hey, MU isn't a bad movie by any stretch - it's a fun movie with a surprisingly realistic message (dreams are great, but not all dreams are necessarily achievable). It's just not a soul-searing emotional-wreck-maker like Monsters Inc. was.

I'm going to argue that Monsters U was a better sequel than Toy Story 3. Except for the admittedly very good bit at the end where the toys go to a new kid, the plot of TS3 was pretty much a mashup of the two films that came before it, along with basically the exact same villain from TS2.

Meanwhile, MU presented the idea that maybe the mainstream way to success (college) isn't the only way to learn something and improve yourself, and even then, just because you want something really badly doesn't mean you'll ever get it, and even that isn't a bad thing.

I'm sort of meh on this movie, but the octopus was great!

For Christmas, I got my wife a behind the scenes tour and "octopus encounter" at a nearby aquarium in April, so we've been sending each other stories about mischievous aquarium octopuses for a while now, and that seemed very right.

Monsters University also elicited one of the loudest guffaws I've ever involuntarily given a gag.

Followed of course by annoying whoever was behind me by throwing metal \m/\m/

This Finding Dory trailer had the same effect pretty much every other Pixar trailer has ever had, i.e. very misty eyes. I'm not a stone.

Also, this trailer leaves me cold but to be fair, most Pixar trailers leave me cold, and then I'm pleasantly surprised (and sometimes even blown away) more often than not.

Yeah, comparing Monsters University to Cars 2 isn't even a thing you can do. Pixar should be downright ashamed of how badly they half-assed Cars 2. Pixar's MO has always been making kids movies with genuine human lessons, but they knew they could get away with bullshit because little pre-nascar boys would eat it up. The fact they went with it goes against everything Lasseter has done since he stopped the phone-in Disney sequel train of the early 2000s. Fucking Planes Fire and Rescue, a sequel of a spinoff movie, is a better movie than Cars 2, and that was made by the Disney Animation B-team (who, admittedly, do a pretty good job with the Tinkerbell movies actually), two steps down from Pixar's quality bar.
posted by Mr.Encyclopedia at 1:44 PM on March 2, 2016 [5 favorites]

I have to wonder if Pixar had to deliberately make Nemo/Dory/etc look like they're rendered in 2003 just to avoid spooking the kids too much.

Pixar's current rendering technology is WAY better than a lot of this. Watch the shallow water in the scene at 1:10. That's some amazing stuff.
posted by JoeZydeco at 1:47 PM on March 2, 2016 [1 favorite]

MU was a pretty middling movie. It was neither Up nor Finding Nemo great, nor was it Cars 2 bad (was Cars 2 ever in theatres or did it go straight to home releases?).

Pixar has its ups and downs, more downs for sequels. It's one of the reasons I think they (pre-Disney at least) resisted making sequels. It's too hard to live up to the original. Better to start fresh when they can.

This looks... horrible. Some beautiful moments, and that octopus was wow, but so much "hey remember that thing you liked before - we're rehashing it!"

I'm still sure we're going to see it because I think animation trailers rarely give you a sense of how good their films will be, and this one looks very Marketing At The Wheel to me. But I didn't enjoy The Good Dinosaur and I was pretty meh on Brave, so it's gone to a must-see first weekend to a wait and see what the critics say. Props for having it pass the Bechdel Test in the trailer, I guess.

I actually thought that Disney's 'Planes Fire & Rescue' was probably one of the better animated features that I've seen in the last few years. It might have apparently been a B-movie, but it had a strong plot and a rousing conclusion.

Monsters University is a brilliant film about talent, effort, and the limits of ambition.

I, um, I must have seen a different movie then.

(What's striking to me about MU is how little I remember of it; and of course it suffers there against MI which is packed full of incredibly memorable moments.)

The weird thing about "Monsters University" is that both of the following statements are true: (a) It was not as good as the first movie, and (b) the first movie really does become incrementally more enjoyable after seeing the second movie, as a result of the increased narrative complexity. It may be the strongest prequel I've seen.

Honestly when that kicked in I thought this was one of those fake trailers like "what if the Shining was a goofy romantic comedy" kind of a thing. But I guess this is actually going to be a real movie.

They need to use a different song for the trailer.

No. The Incredibles is perfect. There is no way the sequel won't be a disappointment. I want to be excited, but I just know it's going to be a letdown.

FIZZ DO NOT MAKE ME GET MY HOPES UP.

Seriously though, I think Finding Nemo and The Incredibles represent the zenith of Pixar. The scripts were amazing. The way they told those two stories was amazing. The production values were amazing. The voice work was amazing. Music, sound design, expanding on what animation could do, everything was phenomenal. I haven't felt the sense of wonder that those two movies made me feel since I was a kid watching good Spielberg films. They haven't matched it since (even though they've done some great work.)

I watch that Dory trailer and I think, "why? Is this really going to be amazing? Is it depending AT ALL on the success of it's predecessor? Because if it is, it's not going to be as good. What was amazing about Nemo and the Incredibles was that they came out of nowhere. I mean, yes, sure, they are full of tropes, and those stories have been told in some fashion before, but it's not like they were making over references to other films (outside of maybe James Bond as a whole, but that's not what I mean.)

If this film can live on it's own, without knowledge of Finding Nemo, then okay. Maybe it will be amazing. But I'm not holding my breath.

Oh my god. It's been like, 15 years since the decline of VHS tapes. This trailer looks and sounds EXACTLY like a direct to video, and not the good ones either! Like it sounds like a direct continuation, and even rehashes the same storylines and familiar scenes from the first movie. AND THAT OUT OF PLACE UPBEAT SONG THAT DOESN'T MATCH THE ATMOSPHERE.

An example of exceptionally good movie sequels is the Aladdin direct to videos. This is not cutting it.

Oh hells yeah!? Return of Jafar still holds a special place in my heart. I love that film. Mostly because they found a way to make Iago a sympathetic character who has good intentions. My sister and I can still randomly quote lines from that film.

Fire and Rescue is by far my daughter's favorite DIsney movie.
It may not be considered top tier, but it's colorful, the hero learns a lesson and, super importantly, NO PARENTS DIE.

Oh yeah. I watch The Good Dinosaur this weekend, and while the story was rather middling the scenery was just outstanding! And familiar, for that matter. When I looked it up and found this part of Montana where I live was one of the places the animators used for reference I wasn't at all surprised.

I've always disliked Pixar sequels because they generally do such a good job of ending their movies. They create a beautiful universe, they show us a beautiful glimpse of it, and then they close it and do it again, only different. I've never found their sequels to be great or interesting because for me the stories they've told with those characters are over. I never needed to see Woody and Buzz again, or Mike and Sully, or Dory and DadFish.

I think I would have liked Monsters University if it had revisited that world but didn't share more than one or two characters with Monsters Inc. Or a Toy Story 2 that revisited Pizza Planet or something. They do a superb job of creating magic in a world but I've always found the magic lacking when they try to tell more stories with the same characters.

I feel vaguely dissatisfied and apprehensive.

Finding Nemo is one of those movies that I go to repeatedly when I need it. It's one of the movies I quote pretty much constantly in my daily life -- right up there with The Princess Bride and The Muppets' Christmas Carol. I even chose my username here from it. While I think The Incredibles is the best Pixar film; Finding Nemo is my favorite Pixar film. I am very much in the target audience for this sequel... and I feel dissatisfied and apprehensive.

Maybe it's the plot rehashing? Then again, The Force Awakens was a rehash of Star Wars and I loved every minute of it. Maybe it's that I'm trying to avoid setting myself up for future disappointment? Maybe it's something else entirely -- like this is actually a dissatisfying trailer?

Oh well. To quote the oddly hilarious DVD menu -- "You don't even have to watch this movie. There are no wrong choices here. The only wrong choice is to sit there and do nothing. Like you're doing."

Most stories are journey stories so I really don't see what the big deal is about a sequel having a journey as a large part of the story. Sense of wonder about the world and learning new things about characters we've come to love (come to love and then hate and then love again due to the millionth rewatch because the little ones in our lives can't live a few days without a nemo viewing) are usually a solid bet. I enjoy Dori's optimism. It will be interesting to see how Nemo deals with Marlin's grumpy demeanor during the road trip because he's going to be learning about how to act whereas when Dori was the chipper companion she could just roll with the negativity by forgetting it.

And yet again it's the humans (probably Americans) that appear to be the only villains and come on Pixar human guilt is so over done.

The line for Turtle Talk is awesome.
While you're waiting in line, you can hear all the kids chattering away like normal.
But as you're leaving, if you listen, every kid comes out talking like a pint-sized Jeff Spicoli.
I love it. It must drive parents nuts for the rest of the day.

As long as the whole "I get to tell it to you over and over again" fish connection scenes are in heavy dosage for Finding Dory, I'd be fine. I'd love to get to know Dory more, I just really don't want it to be a rehash of Finding Nemo's poignant points. Dory deserves her own story and her own tone.
