Meanwhile, in Canada, the Les Montreal Canadiennes and the Calgary Inferno face off for the Clarkson Cup on Sunday afternoon in Ottawa. The game airs on Sportsnet.

The women's game still has a ways to go in the birthplace of hockey.

I have to say I really, really dislike the name "Beauts"

It's a hockey term.

Yay Beauts!

It's a hockey term.

I've heard people say this. But it's not really a hockey term other than the odd time someone says "that goal/whatever was a beauty". Basically we'd have to assume no one in Buffalo ever considered that calling a women's team "Beauts" could be taken as patronizing, and instead picked a weird and kinda dumb name based on something Don Cherry says sometimes.

I've always really enjoyed women's hockey. It's no-check (but not no-contact), at least up through the collegiate level. Many of the college players played on boys teams and are damn good. The play is different w/o checking, very fast and fun to watch.

Hoopo – Agreed, and not a great logo either.

“Buffalo is hockey, and the people here respect those who respect the game,” said Rylan. “We chose the Beauts’ name specifically for Buffalo because of that. ‘Beaut’ is a hockey term and one of the biggest compliments you could ever get as a person. It’s all about being blue collar, ready to work and doing whatever it takes to get the job done.”

Rylan is Dani Rylan, league commissioner. This is a league created by women, for women. You don't have to like it. Can we drop the name derail already?

Since moving to Montreal, I've regularly been taking my 6yo daughter to Montreal Canadiennes games and both of us have enjoyed ourselves tremendously. My daughter has developed her first episode of hero-worship with the incredible Julie Chu.

There's no way the Canadiennes aren't bringing the Clarkson Cup back to Montreal this year.

Also, I didn't realize until this post that Boston had teams in both the Canadian and American professional women's leagues. That's a little odd...

I'm embarrassed to say I didn't even know there was a team in Toronto. Now I do! And they play right around the corner from my place!

/checks standings/

Sigh... yes, these Furies will fit right in in Toronto. Well, at least with so few teams in the league we'll make the playoffs every year.

Two short comments is a derail? Pfft.

Anyway, hopefully the ♥♥♥♥Beauts♥♥♥♥ won't do the usual Buffalo thing and lose in the finals. :-(

Is it really a "National" women's hockey league without Minnesota? Even the NWHL has recognized that Minnesota is a "hotbed" of women's hockey with 19% of the registered female hockey players in the U.S.

Two members of the Boston NWHL team, as well as one of the Canadiennes and five from the Calgary team in the CWHL were part of Cornell's recent years' teams . They were really exciting to watch when they were all at Cornell and kicking ass in the ECAC and going to the NCAA women's Frozen Four playoffs nearly every year.

I think it's also important to talk about Denna Laing when you talk about the Boston Pride. Knight is a powerhouse and a great leader on her team, but damn. Someone who shows up to support her team 6 weeks after that kind of injury has got to be a huge inspiration.

I hope they find a way to have the NWHL and CWHL winners play like Hilary Knight talked about. I think it would be a fun meta-championship that taps into existing rivalries in the sport.

Hoopo: ...a weird and kinda dumb name based on something Don Cherry says sometimes.

In the team name Beauts, I hear both a shortening of the condescending word "beauties," which reminds me of the team names in the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League...but I also hear a Canadian voice* that alllmost makes sense.

Still sexist, though.

* Note: (admittedly not authentically Canadian)

Alluring Mouthbreather: Is it really a "National" women's hockey league without Minnesota?

I grew up watching University of Minnesota hockey in the crummy old barn (where my grandpa's name was up on a Blue Line Club puck). Sometimes I could mooch my uncle's seats in row six, just off center ice, in that sweet balcony -- but usually we sat one on of the wooden benches under the press box. (And oh, that smell of popcorn!)

I took my maroon-and-gold self east to a similarly maroon-and-gold school, Boston College, which as an alum I am proud to say has a fantastic women's hockey team. And it has all started up since I graduated, or I think I would have gone to some of those games instead of just the occasional Beanpot or whatever.

So while I agree with you in spirit, I learned that there really is awesome women's hockey outside the Land of 10k+ Lakes, man. :7)

Buffalo hasn't seen the finals since 1999, how is that the usual Buffalo thing?

Seven minutes remaining in the Clarkson Cup game; currently 7-3 for the Inferno.

Meanwhile, the Boston Pride have won the Isobel Cup with a 2-0 sweep of the series over the Buffalo Beauts.
