Ricardo Larrivée is slowly but surely building his empire outside Quebec. You can access his magazine here in English or in its original French. His Food Network Canada show and also his Radio-Canada show aussi.

He could ply me with lunchtime wine and cake. I'm just sayin'.

I have a soft spot for Ricardo in that his magazine was one of the ways I could practice reading French when in my immersion classes.

It's a worthwhile post but the first article is Pepsi Bleu. It's an article in The Star saying that he is going to be a star announcing his column in The Star's app.

Oh, I didn't see that bit! I just read the article; I didn't realize he had partnered with the Star.

OK, I know it wasn't meant that way, but "Pepsi bleu" made me spit out my tea. (You may need to be of a certain age to get this.)

It’s clear the staff adore Larrivée; he plies them with lunchtime wine and cake, insists no one eat alone at their desk and encourages bringing their kids to the office.

Lunchtime wine and cake? YES.

Insists no one eat alone at their desk? Eating alone at my desk is my Metafilter time, thankyouverymuch; I insist that you leave me alone at my desk.

People bringing their kids to the office? NO. Unless there is a special kid's office (day care?) away from my desk, plz.

Also, Charles de Gaulle made an appearance in a Pepsi commercial in Quebec, I shit you not:

In 1967 Charles de Gaulle created a media and diplomatic storm after he fueled Quebec’s separatism by shouting “Vive le Quebec libre!” from a balcony at Montreal’s city hall.

Last month the former French president’s endorsement of a Quebec nation reappears in a television commercial selling Pepsi to the province’s French-speaking majority.

As an aside, the correction in the NYT piece is amusing:

Correction: August 4, 2009
The Advertising column on Friday, about the popularity of Pepsi in Quebec, misspelled the name of the snowman mascot of Quebec City’s winter carnival in some copies. It is Bonhomme, not Bonne Homme.

I'm running on zero sleep so this was initially read as the French Stewart of Martha Canada

My mom loves the Ricardo magazine. I think a good 75% of that is because it's Canadian, so all the stuff they're trying to sell you, she can actually theoretically buy.

You can spot him by his shoes.

If Ricardo Lariveé is Quebec's Martha Stewart, Véronique Cloutier is our Kathie Lee Gifford..
