I just listened to a fun podcast about the history of ninjas, and the history of the legends about ninjas. It's here, and I have no idea how accurate or inaccurate it is.

Japan's ninjas heading for extinction

Technically, this only applies to wild ninja. Domesticated ninja are quite plentiful. Feral ninja, of course, are a serious problem in many urban areas, but "capture, neuter, shots, release" programs have reduced the impact of feral ninja colonies as disease vectors.

I love this. I especially love the lamé Ninja Hijab in the article. I love the art and arts of Japan.

I once visited a castle on a day they were having a reenactment of a famous battle. I was used to 'historical reenactment' meaning lots of fussing over having the correct buttons and digging trenches, but in this case it meant that halfway through the battle ninjas rappelled down from the top of the castle and started breakdancing.

Later, women dressed as Sanada Yukimura and Date Masamune had a rap battle. This may not have been an official part of the event; it's hard to tell.

There is currently a Ninja Convention in my back yard. It is quite successful, because I can't see a single one.

The roles are full time and the pay is ¥180,000 ($1,600; £1,100) a month, the job ad says

I guess they need the work because it's harder to get a ninja loan these days.

1. Ninjas are mammals.
2. Ninjas fight ALL the time.
3. The purpose of the ninja is to flip out and kill people.

The 'new design a day' t-shirt site at woot.com has had much success with a series of shirt designs featuring "The Unstealthiest Ninja" (and his associate "Oblivious Ninja") ... the current design has Unstealthy vs. Pants.

If any of you are really serious about trying out for this, you would do well to educate yourself on the skills and techniques essential to the practice of Ninjutsu. There are many modern practitioners of the art willing to reveal the ancient secrets of the ninja -- for a price. Ashida Kim is one of the most well-known modern masters. Here is his lesson on Ninja Sentry Removal Techniques, merely a beginning step on the path to becoming one of the dread SHADOW WARRIORS!
