sinking down

"Rikers Island was only 87.5 acres, so for the next couple decades, the city used prison labor to expand the island with ash and garbage to more than 400 acres."

I knew this place was NYC's biggest embarrassment and the people running it were the real criminals, but until now I didn't know it was literally built on trash.

So, being there at all, is a cruel and unusual punishment.

Former Attica superintendent visits a Norwegian jail and is stunned by it's recording studio.

That's how you rehabilitate people. Leaving them in a room the size of a parking spot on garbage island does nothing.

“The library in RNDC was a dedicated space named in honor of a child of a correction officer who died young. It flooded five years ago [and] it’s been flooded continuously since then. It was flooded when I visited two weeks ago.”

You can't even keep your books dry!

Dear Grammy people, prepare my award I'm going to prison in Norway.

And "nothing" is exactly what Americans expect. The US is a uniquely vindictive and penal society, and rehabilitation smacks of coddling and rewarding the crime to them, nevermind the potential positive end result of rehabilitation.

Prisons, healthcare, welfare? The US motto at this point should be "cutting off our noses to spite our faces".

About that....

I see Rikers, I *see* Rykers.
Damn you, Marvel!

I just signed the petition to close Rikers and they only need a few more signatures to reach the initial goal of 500. Please consider adding your name.

Rikers?

What I found most striking about the first article was the statement "The vast majority of people detained at Rikers have not been convicted of a crime", and the way that, after using Candie Hailey-Means' story as an opener, they wait till the end to point out that after three miserable years in Riker's Island, "In May 2015, Hailey-Means was found not guilty of the crime of which she was accused."

Being vindictive towards convicted criminals is one thing, being so vindictive towards people who haven't even been tried yet is much, much worse.

I lean toward "It will hurt less if you stop squirming."

So many horrific stories of prison: abuse of trans* folk; abuse of solitary; overcrowding; over incarceration; bad food; rape...and now toxic fumes and no temperature control? One of the most sickening parts of this article was seeing that lawsuits have been pending over the conditions at rikers since 1975
