Toonz, the animation software used by both Studio Ghibli (for Princess Mononoke all the way up to The Wind Rises) and Rough Draft studio (for the production of Futurama) will be made free and open source to the animation community beginning March 26, 2016.

In before "Good news, everyone!"

But seriously that's amazing. I know some kids interested in animation and they've been making GIFs in Paint so this is a big step up.

If this means that just one budding animator has better access to tools to help share what's in their mind's eyes with the rest of the world, it'll be worth all the other hacks (like me probably) making dumb stuff because we can.

Wait, you can make GIFs in Paint??

I assume they make the frames in paint and compile them online somewhere but this is way better

This is the kind of news where most people go "that's nice" and a very small number are picking their jaws off the floor.

Wait, on the same day we get Anime McDonalds, we get free software to make our own.

Damn. Taunting Rule 34, aren't we?

The video on the site shows a Windows version. I wonder if there's a Linux port (commodity Linux desktops are a big thing in VFX and the like) or an OSX one.

There was a Mac version up to at least 6.0, so I assume a AT&T Linux version would be done fairly quickly.

Thank you AlonzoMosleyFBI for posting this most auspicious news!

What kind of features does it have that other products don't?

I have been wanting to learn animation for forever. I've done a wee bit in flash, but nothing too serious. Now I have and Idea and have been hemming and hawing over what tool to learn and use- after effects? Animate cc? Then hearing this? By golly, I might have my tool.

Can someone who has actually used this chime in on how easy to use the software is, eg does it require a team of sysadmins to even run?

btw if you happen to already have Photoshop, you can also make animations in it.

If it's being open sourced, then it's at least possible that it'll be ported to different platforms.

Now, if only I could draw..

Perhaps not: animation is one of the slowest ways to make porn.

Most gif animations can be made using EasyToon which is fine for shorter clips but tends to break down once you hit a certain amount of drawings.

Also possible to made old-fashioned flip-book animations by scanning in drawings and timing them with PS like mentioned earlier.

March 26? Great!

Now I have four days to learn how to draw.

A friend of mine's been using Paint Tool Sai (in conjunction with Adobe ImageReady) to make short little animations. She's going to love this news.
