Glas and All That Jazz

"Glas won master film maker Bert Haanstra a well-deserved Academy Award® for Best Short Documentary in 1959. The film contrasts the production of hand made crystal from the Royal Leerdam Glass Factory with automated bottle making machines in the Netherlands. An industrial film with a bebop heart, its lyrical use of light and sound still looks and sounds fabulous, nearly 60 years after it was made."

Royal Leerdam Crystal, also known as Royal Leerdam, is the designing and glass blowing department of Dutch glassware producing factory, Glasfabriek Leerdam. The company was founded in 1765 as a manufacturer of bottles in the Dutch city of Leerdam. Royal Leerdam was from 1938 until 2002 part of the Vereenigde Glasfabrieken in Schiedam itself more recently a subsidiary of Groupe Danone S.A. in France. In 2002, the factory became part of the American glass and tableware company Libbey Inc. As of January 2, 2008, Royal Leerdam has merged with porcelain factory De Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles, better known as Royal Delft for its Delftware.

Quite the opposite - sounds like cool jazz to me.

And this film is so liquid, the instruments that make the music, and then the molten glass.

If you liked that, his feature film Fanfare might be Haanstra's masterpiece.
