Transgender Day of Visibility 2016

It feels like there is a Transgender Day Of Visibility/Awareness/Rememberance/Notice Me Senpai every three or four months. I always celebrate them in the same way: making a tweet that says "apparently today is Trans Visibility Day, hi, I'm a transwoman, I draw stuff."

And then I get back to drawing stuff. Mostly a TV show pitch lately.

One of my niece's classmates is transgender. She is a lovely girl and I have known her since 1st grade (they're in 4th grade now). I don't know how anyone knowing a transgender child could deny that child a right to be who they are. I am grateful that at least she hasn't had to deal with any of the crap that Elsie had/has to cope with - she has other struggles, but I'm so grateful that their school makes a concerted effort to be a safe place for her.

Coincidentally this is also The Day Of How Utterly Unenforceable And Unconstitutional Are These Ridiculous Laws Really, The Day Of If You Think The TSA Is Ridiculous, Wait Until The State Puts People On Junk-Checking Duty In Bathrooms, and The Day Of FFS Everybody Should Be Able To Go To The Can In Peace.

It's a lot of days.

In other news (today): Scotland to give legal recognition to people who are neither male nor female (the ruling SNP is making an electoral commitment to allow transgender people to change their birth certificates without having to seek approval from a tribunal of lawyers and doctors, as at present; and to give legal recognition to transgender young people under the age of 18.)

It's telling that the Glasgow Herald had to go all the way to the Wee Frees to find anyone willing to denounce this move. Hint: the leader of the Conservative party in Scotland is Ruth Davidson.

(Sometimes I'm proud of my adoptive country.)

I'll wait until Transgender Day of Screaming.

I see we read the same Tumblr.

Since this day is "set aside to amplify the accomplishments of transgender people globally", I'll just remind everyone that both Wachowski sisters have come out as trans as of this month. I found this post explaining The Matrix in transgender terms to be really interesting.

(A sincere hooray for Scotland, but meanwhile North Carolina is requiring people to use the bathroom corresponding to their sex on their birth certificate. It goes without saying that this will only—can only—be enforced against people who don't "pass". Hoping it will be declared unconstitutional.)

Why did nobody tell me I was invisible this whole time!?!

Well maybe if you were VISIBLE you'd have SEEN the memo. Maybe that's not how this works, though, and we need a new memo.

So I ended up using today to come out to most of my friends and social circle.

Part of that was just that it felt better than picking some arbitrary day, which I guess is something.

My school (in North Carolina) sent out a list of single-occupancy bathrooms today with a message that said in part:

People of all gender identities and expressions, abilities and medical needs are welcomed to use these spaces. These spaces are available for use immediately. Clear signage will be in place shortly. Thank you for helping the University to maintain these facilities as safe and inclusive spaces for our campus community.

Locations will be reviewed and adjustments made on a yearly basis to ensure the list is up to date. The University is committed to adding single occupancy restroom spaces in all new construction and major renovations of our existing facilities.

It'd be better if people could just use the damn group bathroom that they need to use, but I'm glad my university is skirting the law as best it can. Given that our new Chancellor is so far amazing and not a moron, I'm pretty sure they knew exactly what day it was when they sent out the list. So yay, or something.

(I suppose I've completely outed myself. If you're employed by my erstwhile university, I'm not here.)

The Scotland article is really interesting. I had no idea we had so many countries had legal non-binary recognition. I knew about Australia, but the rest are new to me.

Everyone watch Sense8! It's on Netflix, and the Wachowski sisters made it, and it is aaaaawesome~! Be prepared to rewatch episodes as well; it's incredibly dense and thought provoking, and the way they're examining various aspects of peoples' lives is just... amazing. Awesome.
