ASL at the Supreme Court

This week, 12 members of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Bar Association were sworn in to the Supreme Court bar. After they were presented to the court for admission, Roberts signed in American Sign Language: “Your motion is granted.”

In 1982, Michael A. Chatoff became the first Deaf attorney to argue a case before the Supreme Court.

Shame that they don't have some video of this.

Yeah, I went clicking looking for video too. I think the Supreme Court has a blanket "no recoding images" policy. Really sucks extra in this case.

In most respects I'm not a fan of Chief Roberts, but you'd have to be a serious hater not to be touched by the gesture.

Shame that they don't have some video of this.

Would you accept a composite sketch? A “view” from the Court: Making accommodations for the deaf and hard of hearing. "In the second case, in particular, the sign-language interpreter had to think quickly to offer interpretations of such legal or idiosyncratic terms and phrases such as “the restatement of torts,” “hornbook law,” “Chevron on steroids,” and “the dog that didn’t bark.”"

One of the quirks of DC that outsiders usually don't know about is that it has a sizable deaf/hard-of-hearing community and culture, due to Gallaudet University. If you've seen the ASL Burger King video making the rounds this week, that's where they did that. (and if you haven't, here's a link for you.)

I used to have a deaf (or Deaf, not sure if she capitalized) coworker who left to go to law school. I always wondered how she ended up, but she has too generic a name to really google.

Thanks for the link Navelgazer, that's actually one of the cooler advertising campaigns I've ever seen.

Excellent news.

I also had no idea there was a DHHBA, which I now have to investigate joining.
