This has been on my Amazon wishlist for almost twelve years and no one has bought it for me. :(

Also, thanks for getting last Sunday's communion hymn stuck in my head with that title.

Philip K. Dick's (fiction, but not science fiction) book, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer, dabbles in this topic, too, in passing.

... continuing ... The lead supporting character, the former Episcopal Bishop of California (based loosely on James Pike) becomes convinced that psychotropic mushrooms may be at the core of early Christianity, travels to Israel to seek further evidence, and dies of exposure. Dick's storytelling at his best. And though not sci-fi, it fits right into his Valis, The Divine Invasion and Radio Free Albemuth universe.

Can I become a fungal-mentalist Christian?

I always thought Gautama must have gotten pretty hungry sitting under that Bodhi tree and probably snacked on a mushroom or two that popped up. Some of the sutras I've read have parts that seem very much like someone describing their mushroom trip.

or as I once heard it put, aliens don't fly spaceships, they travel nth-dimensionally via mushroom "hallucination", except they've always been here -- we're the aliens.

The song is definitely the best part of the theory that Jesus was a mushroom.

Also worth listening: Terence McKenna opines on the question.
