Mom is Dating Weird Wayne From the wonderful Awful Library Books blog (previously) comes this book by Mary Jane Auch, perhaps most famous for the "I Was a Third Grade ... " series of books

It's not the only book about children mortified by their parent's choice of romantic partners. Perhaps the most beloved is "Mom, the Wolfman and Me" by Norma Klein, where the boyfriend has (gasp!) a beard, which was made into a TV movie with Patty Duke.

The typical theme for these sorts of stories is that the kids are too judgmental and superficial, but they eventually realize the weirdo is a decent guy who really does treat mom well. My lived experience was quite different. My sister and I actually had a great sense of whether a given guy was a good prospect for our mom. The ones we really disliked all turned out to be real jerks and the ones we only found mildly annoying tended to be harmless but not quite right for her (I remember one guy who just seemed to depressed to be with anyone).

Oh, and the guy we liked the most is still one of her best friends.

Is this the wrong thread to mention that my mom is following Brock O'Hurn on Instagram and I'm not okay with it?

My partner's mother has remarried a man who is entirely unsuitable for her and who we avidly dislike.

Of course, his name is Wayne.

Via Amazon (where prices right now range from $0.01 to $145.48), an excerpt from the School Library Journal review:

"One of several outrageous plot events that stretches the imagination but prompts a few laughs occurs when Jenna's first-grade brother wins a Thanksgiving turkey and can't bear to see him hacked up for dinner, so the family rides home from the farm with the turkey strapped in the car seat. The climax is pot-luck Thanksgiving dinner. Lacking in turkey, Jenna's mom creates the main dish out of chicken glued together with hamburger. When a snowstorm hits, neighbors and Weird Wayne share the food, and Jenna realizes that Wayne may just care about her more than her absent dad does."

I suspect I'd have more fun hanging out with Wayne and Jenna's mom than with the people running that site.

Well, "Mom is Dating Weird Al" is a book I'd read...

Some consider the book to be about a spiritual journey and how all living creatures are connected in this way. Others just see the cover and think one thing “Is that lady really getting it on with a bear? NSFW, obviously.

Chuck Tingle wasn't created in a vacuum. Or The Revenant.

NGL, before I read the back of the book/title of this post, I kinda hoped Weird Wayne actually WAS a legally-distinct Weird Al clone.

The narrator would be all "EW MY MOM IS DATING WEIRD AL" and everyone else would be "WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM WEIRD AL IS AWESOME"
