I'm especially fond of the I Love Capybaras Facebook page (in Japanese), which regularly posts videos of capybaras from Japanese animal parks. They're also responsible for the Capybara Navigator, which is a database of all the places in Japan where you can encounter capybaras, and tells you whether you can pet them, feed them, etc.

And this is my own introduction to several capybara petting spots in Japan.

Be sure to have the Kapibara-san theme song playing in the background as you browse any links in this post.

One of the ducklings jumps off, but it is pretty good in the water.

We've had some capybara sightings about 30 miles inland from my location. Since we already have colonies of otters along the coast, a guy in Pismo Beach who taught goats to surf, and a local privately-owned zoo with some obviously non-local animals, the consensus regarding the capybara was basically "mm 'kay"...

It's like ducklings rolling off a capybara's back, as the proverb has it.

In the comments, someone calls it a dwarf guinea pig. It's not. It's the pygmy version of the giant space hamster.

On a practical note, are capybara actually domesticated or just trained? I get for small mammals it really doesn't make a difference, but once they start getting into the small dog range, it becomes a little important.

Capybaras are the Zen masters of the animal kingdom. They are one with everything.

Heretofore, capybara were to me frightful monstrosities, examples of cute gone awry, rodent twee descended into an uncanny gargantuan valley.

This post undoes the (to me) horror-inducing gigantism of capybara, the ducklings lifting this and all capybara to a relative apex of adorable.

I wish I could have seen this earlier.

I had an internet friend who was always complaining about capybaras in his yard. I kept telling him that was not a thing to complain about.

As a matter of public record: when otherwise motionless capybaras flutter their ears I, and the delegates I represent, cannot even.

These are so calming for me; I like to watch them when I'm feeling particularly stressed or anxious. This is one of my favorites.

There is a big pond with lots of ducks in High Park in Toronto. Maybe these capybaras that did a runner from the High Park zoo got some ideas?
