"Many of the people involved in the Washington National Opera’s production of Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle say their first exposure to opera came from the same source—Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd cartoons." [SLWSJ]

To say nothing of The Rabbit of Seville, which is yet another Chuck Jones masterpiece.

I'm surprised anyone's first experience isn't Bugs and Elmer.

Also a perfect example of why we should encourage works to enter the public domain in a timely manner. If current copyright rules applied when Wagner died, Warner wouldn't have been able to create their work when they did.

The article mentions that Chuck Jones, if he'd done a third opera based cartoon, would have chosen Carmen. I would formally like to request transfer to the parallel universe in which this cartoon was made.

I guess it would have been to much to have asked to live in a world where he also did Pagliacci and Ubu Roi.

When I was in high school I was in theatre and we got to help out on the local professional opera companies shows as stage crew. At that point I was sure opera would be all screaming women with helmet with horns. Once we got the stage set up the conductor got us all to sit on the edge of the stage, above the orchestra, and said, "You all might recognize this song." We all thought, 'yeah right...shoot us now.' He smiled and said, "It's from Bugs Bunny." We all perked up and this full orchestra broke into the overture to Barber of Seville.
Still get shivers thinking about that moment, even 35 years later.
