100+ years of Holmes & Watson movies, in one vid

As part of the fanworks exchange "A Holmesian Solstice", fanvidder sanguinity made "Something Good (Will Come From That)" (video, 3min16sec), covering "One hundred years of moving pictures about Holmes and Watson." The fifty-four video sources used include Sherlock Holmes stories from several countries, including India, Russia, China, South Korea. The vidder's commentary discusses noticeable changes in cinematography over the past century, how those changes make Holmes and Watson more or less "shippy", re-gendered and chromatic retellings, and contemporary settings versus the "It's always 1895" conceit.
There is no greater Holmes than Jeremy Brett. He was the ur-Holmes. He was the Platonic ideal.

Great video, thanks! Also wanted to agree that as much as I may dig a Berniche McCutchinstich, or Nelson Riddle-Rathbone, and I dig 'em like Sugar Smacks, man, it's Brett's world and we're just lucky enough to rewind in it.

Wow, the video was lovely and the commentary is very fascinating! Liu is the longest-running watson! Holms and watson touch each other ALL THE TIME in 4:3 productions. Films were all set in contemporary time until SOMETHING HAPPENED. Neet!

Clever edit from Ian McKelkan as Mr. Holmes sitting in the theater to Young Sherlock Holmes. In Mr. Holmes, he's gone to see a Sherlock Holmes movie, and the screen version of Holmes is played by Nicolas Rowe, the star of Young Sherlock Holmes.

For the longest time, I was anti-Elementary, but then something clicked. I'm very much a fan of the show. Though I do understand how some people might dislike it's Law & Order-esque format. While it may not adhere to much of the Sherlock canon, I appreciate the characters. The chemistry between Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu is delightful to me. I haven't had time to watch the latest season, but the first three seasons were entertaining. I also appreciate that in this version of the Sherlock-universe, that Sherlock is a recovering addict that struggles with his past drug abuse.

It may be an artifact of the time period rather than a technical decision made to accommodate different aspect ratios. Prior to say, 1945, there was much less "gay panic" about male-male touching in social situations. I forget where the reference is, but I think somebody studied photos of Ivy League rugby and football teams over the 1910s to the 1940s. In the circa 1910 photos or even late 19th century photos, the men are much more comfortable placing hands on each other, but in the circa 1940 photos, the men are much more restrained with touching other men.

The cleverest bit (aside from the aforementioned Nicolas Rowe segment) was showing the Veggie Tales clip and then very soon after showing Watson taking two vegetables in his hands and making them walk along the table.

By the vidder: "here, have a complete list of all the female Holmeses and female Watsons in the vid, time-stamped by first appearance, with links to video…" such as "Herlock" and "A Study in Charlotte". Also cool: "S-her-lock (listed among the f/f adaptations, above) has an explicitly trans Watson, played by a trans actress, Lisa Bunker."
