FWIW CHVRCHES have a very enjoyable live show. I deployed some art to the Treasure Island Music festival, and saw them there by accident. They were just really fun and interactive.

poe: The first time I saw them, they'd just gotten off a plane from Scotland, and they were clearly jetlagged; while the songs were pretty great, they didn't really talk. (That was when they were touring "The Bones Of What You Believe".)

The second time, back in April, was... a little different. (Video.)

How is it pronounced? "Ch-vurches?"

It's probably "churches" but I prefer "Ch-vurches"
posted by jcruelty at 2:38 PM on July 11, 2016 [3 favorites]

It is pronounced chvurches, just like The VVitch is pronounced The VurVuritch, the game WipEout is pronounced Wip-EEE-out and the movie Se7en is pronounced Sesevenen. This is law.

It's "Churches." The V was a deliberate stylistic/marketing decision so that they were actually searchable and not buried in the google results.

That is a very boring pronunciation.

(The VurVuritch? Shouldn't it be the Vee-Vee-itch, or Va-vitch?)

I always pronounce it it "sǝɥɔɹʌɥɔ"

I actually tend to pronounce it The Vurrvitch or sometimes The Vurrvurrvitch - possibly a hidden triple-u in there.
posted by Artw at 2:49 PM on July 11, 2016

Chvrches as the Latin v = English u. In much the way the pronunciation of Queen Victoria was "Yu-i-chor-ia" owing to her Latin roots and her arachnid form.

I have actually pretty mild feelings about the video itself here—mostly just the lack of any real narrative hook to it, I suppose, though I like the look of it well enough—but gosh almighty do I love this band and it's interesting to hear this version of the track with someone else's vox on there mixed in with Lauren's.

As for pronunciation, it's actually pronounced in my experience as a short conversation:

JOSH: So this Churches song—
FRIEND: You mean Chuh-ver-ches?
JOSH: ಠ_ಠ
FRIEND: Chuh-ver-ches.

Man I love Chvrches. And they were SUCH A FUN live show. I don't get super dance-y these days but I danced really hard at that show.

I had Clearest Blue on repeat for like 6 months after the second record came out. (If you didn't hear them on Song Exploder, check it out.)

I have no respect for anyone who can't pronounce the "Chvur" sound without throwing an extra "uh" in there.

I don't know if I've ever seen a band improve so markedly from early tours to later ones as Chvurches. They're just fantastic now, a must-see.

Definitely Ch-vur-ches. It's like how Ke$ha is pronounced "Keh-dollar-sign-ha", or Godspeed You! Black Emperor is shouted for the first two words and then there's a long pause before the rest. You can't put weird stuff in your band name and not have it pronounced.

I like Chvrches and I like Jamie McKelvie but this video seemed to be a bit good concept fairly dull execution.

Did make me want an animated Wicked and the Divine pretty badly though.

Except those guys who put a period at the end of their one word band name, because fuck that.

Also, while we're at it, Pokémon has the stress on the second syllable.

My wife and I say Chuh-ver-ches because it's just more fun to say, dammit. And I did call the movie "The VuhVitch".

It's pronounced "Pt", as in phonetic punctuation.

Come to think of it, if you want to pronounce Godspeed You! Black Emperor accordingly, I'll accept that too.

I love me some CHVRCHES, and Every Open Eye is a killer album... but this version of "Bury It" kinda leaves me cold. Might be because I've played the album version so much that it's seared into my brain, but I dunno.

Love the visual style, though.

I saw them last month and they were awesome, it was such a fun show. I usually go to arms-crossed, foot-tapping emo shows, I'm not used to an entire venue bouncing up and down in unison. I love the album version of this song, but I'm not convinced yet on this one. It sounds a little over autotuned to me, and I really love Lauren Mayberry's voice on the album version. I can live without Hayley Williams on there, but the video is cute.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of the band, but didn't see much point in this version. The album version is perfection, and this didn't deviate in any interesting ways.

The song alone would have gotten no more than a "meh" from me, but the video: AWESOME SAUCE.

And CHVRCHES, however you pronounce it, is just more proof that we have reached Peak Band Name. There are no good Names left, mo matter how many "that's my next band's name" jokes you may make, Dave Barry.
The V was a deliberate stylistic/marketing decision so that they were actually searchable and not buried in the google results.
I'm so relieved that Google wasn't around when The Band, The Who, Yes, U2, etc. were just starting out. The only ones who were truly "Google-ready" were The Beatles and The Monkees. Remember The The? I didn't think you would.

As a teenager I listened to an absolutely unbelievable amount of Paramore for a boy, and I looooove CHVRCHES, so this is one of those pairings that I may not see again ever.

But CHVRCHES ... despite having seen them live (and schlepped ~mumblemumble~ miles for it), I still refuse to believe that Lauren Mayberry is real. She is wonderful.

Strident and unyielding, a feminist icon with a voice of an angel.

Although I do think part of why I am so enthralled with her is that she would beat me up if I ever said anything, as is her right, of course.

My favorite deep cuts ... Playing Dead / Strong Hand.

Also, the Scottish accent. Be still, my heart.

mrgoat: " It's like how Ke$ha is pronounced "Keh-dollar-sign-ha", or Godspeed You! Black Emperor is shouted for the first two words and then there's a long pause before the rest."

No, it's not "Ke-dollar-sign-ha", it's "Ke-ha-dollars". Like, you wouldn't say "Godspeed You Exclamation Point Black Emperor" -- you don't read the name of the symbol, that's not how exclamation points work. It's "GODSPEED YOU! black emperor". Similarly, you don't pronounce "$5" as "Dollar Sign Five", you pronounce it as "Five Dollars". So Ke$ha would be "Ke Ha Dollars."

Beautiful work from Mckelvie (with a Satoshi Kon vibe), and that song! I too, would love an animated The Wicked and the Divine (where gods are literal rockstars...)

Have to add my favorite performance from them at NPR...

The most confusing band to follow back when was Freur - in itself still good Google - but they spelled it thus, an ideogram that looked like nothing so much as a snail run over by a truck. Perhaps TAFKAP could get away with it, but not a quirky art-prog-new-wave outfit with all sorts of image issues. (Loved the music, though, and they did become Underworld, so all's well, etc.)

As someone who has been following godspeed for almost 2 decades, I absolutely concur. It is essential to stay up to date where the pause happens.

I can't stop watching this. It has a perfect three act structure. Plus, it's an amazing song paired with amazing animation.

Two thumbs up! Would recommend!
