Natural Style: Menswear designer Suket Dhir

"I am my own muse, I design for myself," says Suket Dhir, this year's winner of the International Woolmark Prize. And, according to one style editor, "he could be the first Indian designer to conquer the world of Western menswear."

Dhir's chosen materials are natural fabrics; his inspiration is his grandfather:
“To me, my grandfather was one of the best-dressed men, and his style seemed to have been stuck in the 1940s,” remembers Dhir, who showcased super-loose pants, which were a slightly exaggerated version of his grandfather’s pyjamas, classic shirts, kurtas and jackets in beautifully dyed, light-weight woven wool from across the country. It was a classical rendition of Western tailoring with a nazakat (finesse) that can only be distinctly Indian.
His Woolmark Prize-winning collection may be seen here. Said the designer upon winning the award, "The look is easy and happy, and the world needs that right now."

I am loving his work. Hopefully it's not outlandishly expensive, because I'd really like to get some of these garments.

The pants in that sketch look uniquely unsuited to bicycle riding.

I am convinced. After I win the lottery I will retain him to make my clothes. Him and that Damir Doma guy. And my shoes will be English.

My bicycle will have a covered chain so that I can wear loose pants.

Also, for those who don't know this kind of thing: you may be interested to hear that Saint Laurent and Lagerfeld both won the Woolmark prize in youth. (Along with a young woman amateur who never designed anything for the public again - I've always wondered what her story was.)

So we're just pretending the Nehru jacket never happened, then?

As mentioned in the first link, the Nehru jacket was copied from British military uniforms.

I love this stuff. After years of stuffy, tight fitting clothes with peacock accessories , things started swinging back to loose and flowing last year and this collection is a breath of fresh air. Yeah, I could really stand a few of these outfits.

Roll up the cuffs to the knee while riding.

Him and that Damir Doma guy.

There's an unlikely combination.

These clothes look really cool, though!
