Straight Outta Oz

Todrick Hall has been here before, but he recently released Straight Outta Oz as an ambitious visual album on YouTube. It's a Wizard of Oz allegory about his life growing up as a gay black teenager and his rise to stardom. It also features some great singing and dancing, and he's touring with a live version now.

I had never heard of Todrick before yesterday, when I randomly decided to go see his show at a nearby theater. The live show was actually amazing, it's basically a very modern version of a broadway musical, with lots of crowd interaction and some very talented performers. The live version of Wrong Bitch was particularly great and it was interesting to see the audience's reaction to gay kissing. My audience in Raleigh was 90% enthralled and 10% confused, but everyone eventually stood up and got into it.

Just seven minutes into the video and my mind has been blown several times over. This is extraordinary.

...rise to stardom? This is satire, amiright?

That bit definitely feels like satire, but thinking back about it yeah stardom was a bit of a stretch on my part. "Rise to writing a jingle for an airline" was too long.

Where thousands wait for someone to make them a star, Toddrick Hall built his own star vehicle. Phenomenal.

He's a "go-to" fav to cheer me up when I'm down. Most of his stuff is really great, though there are certainly misses. I didn't go to his show when it passed through and I really should have.
