Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem played Outside Lands today. (SLYT) The world-famous Muppet band played their first festival gig today — San Francisco's Outside Lands. Aside from "Can You Picture That," the opening number, they also did a number of covers, ending with "With A Little Help From My Friends" done with the Oakland Tabernacle Choir. Hotcha!

I like that the electric mayhem are a legit good band? Like they’re good even beyond being muppets! And muppets are already amazing!

"Aurora Borealis / Shinin' down on Dallas" remains one of the most audaciously fun lyrics ever.

This is amazing, and almost makes me wish I'd contemplate thinking about going to a huge music festival. If I saw Dr. Teeth on the bill, I'd definitely do such contemplation.

The attention to detail is so awesome! All the mics were plugged in, and Floyd had a wireless transmitter on his guitar strap. I love it!

...well, of course they were. How else do you expect to hear the band, huh?

ZOMG so much Electric Mayhem love! They are my absolute favorite part of "The Muppet Movie." I'm gleeful to see this!

I AM SO SAD I WASN'T THERE.

I love this and I'm glad Disney is still sticking with the Muppets despite the recent TV show. (Which I loved, but others had problems with.)

Did Spinal Tap open, by any chance?

you get such odd suggested videos when watching Dr. Teeth.

I guess the video interludes were so that the Muppeteers could swap in and out -- it must be exhausting to be operating them blindly with no one able to say "Cut!"

Do you think the audio was live or pre-recorded?

Can you believe these guys have been rocking out for more than forty years? They look great!

Disgusting. The Electric Mayhem used to be about the music, man. I was there in the early days, when they'd rent out a church in the middle of nowhere and you'd come out of the show to find your car painted over in psychedelic colors. Now they're just another arena rock band of has-beens humping the cash cow on a wave of nostalgia.

For me, The Electric Mayhem ended when the original Zoot died of a heroin overdose in 1991.

Check out that schedule for the main stage.

Dr Teeth, Chance the Rapper, Third Eye Blind...Lionel Richie?!?

This cements my opinion that "With A Little Help From My Friends" is overall the best song of its era. Animal is right: "Enough chit-chat. Play music! Play Music!"

Science save me from the Paul Zoot Is Dead conspiracy theorists.

Years ago there was a plan to have the band My Morning Jacket tour as the Electric Mayhem, in a similar concept to this, and several songs they wrote for Dr. Teeth wound up on later MMJ records.

But honestly the fact that the current Mayhem is using synthesized horns is a fucking tragedy.

This had me looking at Animal's heads, thinking that they clearly should be coated Emperors and you ought to be able to tell. Then I thought that using coated Ambassadors on the bottom of toms would be fine even for a heavy player using Emperors up top.

There was an awesome band in SF awhile back called The Dead Hensons that did Electric Mayhem covers and some of the old sesame street tunes like "5" and the muppet show intro.
There is also a band called "Cookie Mongoloid" that does a Heavy Metal Cookie Monster act that is really well done and can result in mosh pits.

I'm old enough to believe in my heart of hearts that every 'death metal' vocalist stole the vocal style from Cookie Monster.

FTFY. Still great, but just for accuracy's sake.

Wow, Janice has hardly aged a day. The others hide it behind all that facial hair, but you can still tell.

I was there a decade ago when Daft Punk's Coachella set changed dance music culture for a decade and I was there yesterday when the Muppets' Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem played a watershed set at Outside Lands that will have hip new bands for half a generation reaching for the hot glue gun to affix colored felt to themselves.

Dr Teeth, Chance the Rapper, Third Eye Blind...Lionel Richie?!?

Lana del Rey was on the other big stage during Lionel Ritchie. I was convinced that this was a subtle suggestion that the crowd should start heading home a little earlier on Sunday... and then I saw Lionel's crowd -- much bigger and much younger than I'd have expected.

The Electric Mayhem was a huge, huge highlight of the day, for quite possibly everyone on that field. In a day full of smiles, both legal and otherwise, by far the densest display of teeth was on display for the Muppets. The Doctor lived up to his name.

And then the choir came out at right about the time that the fog broke (for basically the first time in 3 days), and the spectacular stained-glass visuals on the video wall behind the band showed up. Everywhere you looked, nothing but faces in awe of what they were seeing. Young and old alike were flashing back to the first time they saw Wilkins or Kermit or Grover (and quite a few young enough to believe Elmo has always existed). Huge face-hurting grins, blown minds, and more than a few tears (and not just because we missed Rowlf). It was kind of magical to see that kind of raw, shared emotion in a crowd of such diverse ages and tastes.

Appropriate that this would come from Guy Smiley, with whom Janice was occasionally romantically attached back in the late '70s.

The difference is that Janice has gone bodymod. The uvula stands out now because it's pierced and sporting a barbell.

I was like ha-ha, but the original Janice died of AIDS: HIV took a turn through the Street which seemed to take too many too soon.

Zoot in their recent show seems to have been through something-Anonymous so perhaps he's on better legs now.
