Carlos Fuente Sr. has passed away. The patriarch and longtime chairman of Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia., died on Friday night in Tampa, Florida, after a battle with stomach cancer. He was 81 years old. Fuente ran one of the world's largest handmade cigar companies, presiding over such storied brands as Arturo Fuente and Fuente Fuente OpusX, and making many brands for others, among them all Ashtons and Diamond Crowns. More here.

Haven't smoked a Fuente for a while, but the Hemingway 7"x48 perfecto is what I was smoking over at a friend's house when he introduced me to my now partner of quite a few years. May need to burn one this week.

I was no expert in my more-cigarry days (which are by no means over, only on hiatus), but after taste testing probably 50 varieties, AF wound up becoming my go to. For a little while I'd actually keep them around rather than just picking something up on my way wherever. Now I'm thinking of Grant's Tobacco in SF, which had been around for generations but got rent-raised out of business. That pretty much started the hiatus.

I have to wonder how the whole Cuba thing is going to shake out, but the guys at the store always said Dominicans were just as good regardless.
