I thought it was kind of neat as a proof of concept.

Whoah, this was very cool indeed.

A note to anyone thinking about playing: it looks and feels like a jump-scare horror type game, but it's not, so if that's something that worries you then go ahead and give it a shot.

Yeah, no, I couldn't stop at one. I poked every single sheep, just because they were there.

One I poked twice.

tep, hard to say without spoiling stuff. Borrow a friend's pc or visit the library--it's worth a look.

So is there any there there? I ran around, poked and stabbed sheep, and found a book. No key appeared from any of this, and my patience for games that are presumably leading up to a one shot joke is not high.

We'd really really like people to not turn threads into ROT-13 wastelands.

Come on people, this thread is garbage right now.

I think this thread has to have spoilers and we're going to have to agree that that's ok.

In other news, people who send "racist, sexist, and disgusting messages" (from zamboni's article) are why the rest of us can't have nice things.

I think I shall go poke more sheep.

So, the book for me showed someones email address, so i put a fake one in there. It emails you later? Or does it just tell random people what you put in?
posted by lkc at 5:54 PM on August 14, 2016

lkc: The book only shows names. If you saw an email in the book it's probably because someone made a mistake while answering the questions at the end of the game.

The game uses the email to send you the epilogue.

Wish there was a version that didn't require a steam account.. I know that probably seems weird in 2016 but yeah.. that's me i guess.

some loser: I was able to play the game without steam on my linux computer using the "non steam link" in the more inside of the post

I thought it was some sort of time travel plot so I copied the answers from before, which is irritating. I'd like to try through and get the key etc, all I found was the lady and the farmer.
posted by jeather at 7:08 PM on August 14, 2016 [2 favorites]

Just got my email!

As you left the cave you were confronted by a farmer called Faggot.

sigh.

On the bright side, the farmer I encountered was named Meta, so YOU'RE WELCOME for not knifing you, fellow Mefite.

(I really wish the email replayed your first encounter. My ghoul said something cryptic and mumbly... Why are you bloody? "FML"... What have you done? "Killer somebody", and I can't remember the third. It seemed appropriately creepy in context.)

Thank you, idiopath. I fail at reading.

Met some guy in the cave who apparently fucked my whole family, which was weird, but I let him pass because that's no reason to kill a man.

i just heard kevin killed me. judgemental fucker.
posted by andrewcooke at 8:19 PM on August 14, 2016

According to the email I received, "lol" asked me why I was bloody, and I responded with "I killed her." Then they knifed me. I can't say I blame them.
posted by turtlebackriding at 8:48 PM on August 14, 2016

I suspected what was going on by the end, so I gave answers that would be just cryptic enough to be interesting but not so cryptic as to be frustrating:

"I heard moans, what have you done?": "Nothing you wouldn't do yourself" (I actually didn't kill Julia, but, eh)
"Why do you have a knife?": "It was given to me"
"Why are you covered in blood?": "julia"

At which point Rachel apparently stabbed me which, looking back at my answers, I can't really blame her for.
posted by Itaxpica at 9:06 PM on August 14, 2016 [1 favorite]

(Also I'd like to thank the person before me for giving possibly the oddest answer to the "why do you have a knife" question: "mama, oooh oooh, pulled a knife out of a stump, have a lantern, Donald Trump")
posted by Itaxpica at 9:08 PM on August 14, 2016 [5 favorites]

Why do you have blood on your overalls?
Julia. She was hurt, near death. I wanted to save her but she begged me to help her end it. Gods help me, I did. *sob*
Why do you have a knife?
The nearsighted brother in the cave gave it to me. Would that I had never seen it, or him. Poor Julia! None should suffer so.
I heard moans, what have you done?
It was Julia you heard moaning, and she's gone now. I'm going to get the priest. I hope she's found the peace she sought.
After hearing your answers nathan decided to kill you with the knife received from the wood chopper. Which was unfortunate as you chose to spare the life of the previous farmer, Luna.

-----
Why do you have blood on your overalls?
ROSES ARE RED, SORROW IS BROWN. SHE TRIED TO RUN BUT SHE WAS FOUND.
Why do you have a knife?

Me? Why do *YOU* have a knife, my friend? I see yours is dry. That's no way to treat a knife, friend, no way at all.
I heard moans, what have you done?
ROSES ARE RED, PERIL IS NEAR. DON'T ASK A QUESTION WHOSE ANSWER YOU FEAR. Will you let your knife drink from me, my friend?
After hearing your answers Bruce decided to let you pass. This was quite a foolish act considering that you were covered in blood from the killing of the previous farmer, Shibly.

Figures.

This was kind of a neat idea! The ending actually caught me kind of off-guard, to be honest.

Apparently I went back in time and killed Hitler. Can't wait to see if the next person who plays believes that's why I'm covered in blood.
posted by charred husk at 7:09 AM on August 15, 2016

As you left the cave you were confronted by a farmer called Valdemar. They asked you two questions.
The first question that was asked was:
Why do you have blood on your overalls?
To which you responded:
I killed Hitler.
The second question that was asked was:
I heard moans, what have you done?
To which you responded:
Left Julia so I could go get help.
After hearing your answers Valdemar decided to let you pass. This was quite a foolish act considering that you were covered in blood from the killing of the previous farmer, Adolf.
posted by charred husk at 8:04 AM on August 15, 2016

The post mortem owns up to this, but it's clear they really did track the wrong factoid. The last line of the email would make a lot more sense more of the time if it were in regards to whether you killed Julia, not the previous farmer. The previous farmer could have been a murderer! (Likewise, knowing whether you let a murderer or an innocent pass into the village has a more interesting story logic to it than the one comparison/moral-statement they do make for you.)
posted by nobody at 5:06 PM on August 15, 2016

To be fair to the farmer I killed, his name was actually Adolf and all he did was quote lines from Mein Kampf in German so I don't know if he killed the previous farmer or Julia.
posted by charred husk at 5:32 AM on August 16, 2016

On my first runthrough, I didn't suspect anything - the names and the book were all normal and the farmer's responses were very videogame-appropriate (two of the three were '...').

On my second play, ...
'Why is there blood on your overalls?'
'penis'
posted by Gordafarin at 12:59 AM on August 21, 2016 [2 favorites]

When I played this I mirrored the first two answers previously given ("idk" was one). Couldn't resist playing up at the third question though.

Q: What have you done?
A: Darling, what haven't I done?

Ahhh, the old ones are the best (I was allowed to live, fwiw).
