Meow? Meowl!

What could possibly be stranger than a cat? The obvious answer: a meowl.

First sighted in roughly 2013, meowls have their very own subreddit. Their offline range includes Atlanta (meowral by R. Land) and... well, wherever this person lives.

If you like these meowls, that doesn't mean you will also like cats with owl faces. Don't say I didn't warn you.

I love that the Chinese refer to owls as "cat-face eagle". I love words that are made up of other words in a descriptive & funny way. Cats and owls also have a lot in common. We're attracted to them because of their big eyes but they're actually ancient killing machines. Also, Nibbler from Futurama.

Do you want owlbears?

Because that's how you get owlbears.

Messing with forces of nature beyond your understanding.

I may have been casually dismissive of furries until I learned that cat headed owl was an option. I want to believe.

Then it will please you to know that "fish" in Korean is mulgogi. Mul means water. Gogi means meat. Water meat.

There's a reason the Mandarin word for owl is literally "cat-headed hawk".

Octopus in Norwegian is blekksprut, which means ink-squirt if your translate it directly.

This is wonderful. I often call one of my cats "little owl" when she sits blinking at me with a pensive, assuredly owlish look on her face.

Then it will please you to know that "fish" in Korean is mulgogi. Mul means water. Gogi means meat. Water meat.

Also, you don't even use mulgogi to refer to fish as food, despite the fact that its suffix buddies dwaejigogi, soegogi and dakgogi denote 'pork', 'beef' and 'chicken' respectively. No, 'water meat' is reserved to describe fish as they live in nature. I have no idea why this is and would love someone to patiently explain it to me

I like the owl-faced cats better, actually. It seems like they would work better from a hunting standpoint, also from a petting standpoint.

Part of what allows this idea to work is how often the fur patterns of cats are similar to the feather patterns of owls, so a good Photoshopper can blend, for example, the tabby cat head with the Great Horned Owl body. I think it's fascinating when different species converge on similar colour patterns.

I read somewhere that eye placement is a good key to knowing whether an animal is prey or predator. Simply put: prey animals have eyes placed on opposite sides of the head for 360-degree views--very useful defensively. Predators, by contrast, have eyes placed together for maximum forward stereo vision.

Cats and owls are both predators, and for this reason have faces with large, forward-facing eyes that interchange nicely.

Oh, and they really are cute.

I do not think that it is a good idea to give beaks to cats.
