Good As Hell

Minneapolis alt-hip-hop artist Lizzo won [Luke Burbank's and Andrew Walsh's podcast] TBTL's "Song Of The Summer" bracket battle with her single Good As Hell (beating out competition from JT and Sia and Avett Brothers and many others). It's easily MY song of the summer, but Lizzo is awesome way beyond this one song.

A small selection of her songs (in no particular order) includes Phone, My Skin, and Faded.

Jezebel interviewed her a while back, for a bit more insight into Lizzo.

Great post hippybear! Lizzo was also the first interviewee ever on Sooo Many White guys - 'tis a podcast. Good As Hell is so uplifting, and I've been enjoying Lizzo's back catalogue over the last few months.

Anyone else feel like emailing that (overwhelmingly excellent) music video to the 11th Circuit?

"Good as Hell" is beautiful, fun, and happy. Thank you, hippybear!

It was great watching Lizzo crush each opponent in the TBTL Song of the Summer voting by wider and wider margins with each succeeding round. It usually tightens up the deeper into the voting you go but IIRC she wound winning the championship round with something like 75% of the vote. I love her genuineness.

Also, is it too early to get a fish sandwich?* ;-)

I'm not a huge hip-hop fan, but she's good and this track is key. I expected the same same-ness, but the break did it.

Lizzo is the greatest!!!

Here's TBTL (Too Beautiful To Live)'s full bracket, for those interested in seeing what she beat (and more about the podcast itself).

I had the good fortune to see The Chalice, of whom Lizzo was 1/3 of, open for Har Mar Superstar at the Turf Club, a tiny bar in St. Paul a couple years ago. They were mind-blowingly good.

Don't forget Batches and Cookies, which my daughters sing as a fake girl scout anthem Badges and Cookies.

Oh, and that video for Batches and Cookies was partially filmed during the celebration of Minnesota legalizing same sex marriage, which will always be a shining bright day in this state.

Looooove Lizzo and especially this song. I completely missed that post from December. Guess I know what I'll be listening to on the ride home today.

The song showed up almost randomly on iTunes, and I liked the preview, downloaded it, and have been listening to it all summer.

Did not know she was a fellow Minneapolitan. Am both delighted and ashamed of myself.

I've seen her a couple of times (Get Cryphy 7th anniversary at First Ave and then this summer at the Pizza Luce block party) and her live show is amazing.

Her appearance on The Late Show was... weird and disappointing, and I don't really know why. I hope she's back on again with a different song because more people really need to know about and enjoy her.

I spent a very fun, very exhausting weekend last weekend full of friends and people and drinking and not eating enough and many outfit changes. I somehow managed to lose a pair of shoes between a hotel room and my car (or something -- they were cheap, anyway).

So it was a delight to recover Monday and watch and listen to "Phone." It was the perfect wrap-up to my weekend.

That is the cutest thing I have heard all day.

Totallly listened to 'good as hell' on repeat the day that I quit my job. No regrets.

As a Minneapolis resident, I got to hear Lizzo on the radio first as a member of the Chalice. Check out this live clip of Chalice, Push It, which begins as a completely different song called "Push It" until it turns into a giggly version of Salt 'n' Pepa's "Push It."

So, Lizzo's new EP just came out, and this song appeared on the interwebs: Worship. It looks like much of the rest of the EP is also online in the YouTube sidebar.

I've got tickets for Seattle. Weather permitting, of course. (300 miles away over the Cascade mountains, maybe not possible in January.)
