welp

looks like I'm adding one more to my already comically large list of calligraphers I follow on Instagram

Are you willing to share that list? (please?)

I like the way the light brings out the texture of the paper in the videos. I also like that the style is very basic and readable (yeah, arty calligraphy is cool and all, but I just end up going "pine tree? Maybe? Fuck it."). I really enjoyed the 義 video for some reason.

Is the calligraphy commentary on the coffee? Or is it drawn while drinking the coffee thus inspired?
posted by sammyo at 8:25 AM on September 26, 2016

It is actually mandatory to post pictures of coffee on Instagram.

Yeah, the calligraphy and coffee are unrelated beyond them both being posted by the same person.

I live in perpetual fear that the Instagram Police will be coming for me any day now because I haven't posted any coffee photos.

I have always admired hand-lettering (and the artists who do it) ever since I was first exposed to it in high school (thank you you Mr. Glore!) I've always thought the sort of immediate, masterful command of the stroke shown by master Japanese calligraphers is the high bar one should work toward, no matter what language you work in. It's fucking inspiring stuff. Even more so if you ever get to watch a master at work.
