I hated that necktie anyway

Beautiful. Everything about this trailer, even with the studio's own music suggests this will be one of the great screen Superman. Certainly feels more in the spirit of the pre-Flashpoint comics than Man of Steel etc.

SPOILER: this girl is super

Goddammit I'm only on episode 6; they only just revealed she's a girl.

I'm pretty sure the Superman theme they used is from the moment when Superman catches the helicopter.

So although we don't see it, I imagine all those people we saw watching in concern suddenly going absolutely bananas with joy.

A while back (when I had a roommate), my roommate was playing one of the DC Lego video games, and every time Superman goes to fly it plays the music for a second. Superman needs to fly a couple blocks to pick up an item? BA-BA-BA-BA-BA! It was ridiculous, and often made me laugh, but part of my brain was thinking "this song is great, oh man" every time.

This gave me chills even without the Williams music. I'm an easy mark, though.

Not to quibble, but it'd be nice if they could think of something for them to do besides catch airplanes. It's difficult not to feel that Superman could be made entirely redundant by a really good Metropolis Vocational Training School for Airplane Mechanics.

Meanwhile, the guys in the movie division are going, "Maybe if we killed SUPERMAN's parents... I know, what if we had Batman's parents kill Superman's parents...?"

Of all the superhero shows I watch, and god there are so many, if you'd told me last fall that Supergirl would the one I most anxiously anticipating coming back, I would have been surprised but pleasantly surprised. And that's what this show is - just so freaking pleasant.

Agreed. The Flash and Supergirl on their own are just warm and fuzzy, but that crossover episode? I am pretty sure my squee of delight was heard two towns over.

I love that Superman turns up next to Supergirl alongside the Venture, and doesn't help her right away, just flies along without putting his hands on the plane. Because she doesn't really need his help, and he's cool with that. And then helps anyway, because why not?

One of the things that delights me most about Supergirl is that Cat Grant is essentially Veronica Palmer from Better Off Ted, just in a different industry and a few years ahead. There were a bunch of conversations between Veronica and Linda in BOT that touched on a lot of the same things that the conversations between Kara and Cat do.

And I mean Veridian Dynamics may as well have been LexCorp.

I also loved that Superman just hangs back at first, but it's even better than that. She says "This looks like a job ... for the both of us!"

Why is Cat Grant wearing Black Panther's outfit?

We're trying not to have the TV on in front of the baby which means I'm having to prune my superhero TV. Arrow will probably get cut this year, and Legends of Tomorrow was awful, so that's fine, but Supergirl? I'll watch that in my office during the work day if I need to.

Luke Cage comes out tomorrow? Ugh how will I ever manage this.

Yeah, Luke Cage looks pretty good to me. The trouble is, I feel like I should have watched Jessica Jones before starting Luke Cage... and while I like a lot of things about Jessica Jones, the tone of the whole thing is so freakin' UNHAPPY that I'm having a hard time getting into it. I mean, I've watched right up to the point where Tennant shows up, and it doesn't seem like it's about to lighten up.

I was hearing talk about Flash pushing Arrow into less self-serious grimdarkiness and more toward Fun, is that at all accurate?
posted by griphus at 11:15 AM on September 29, 2016

Not really. Oliver makes a couple of jokes and is sometimes happy, and Merlyn is the butt of a couple of jokes, in S4 but the grimness remains. Flash itself is less fun in S2 than in S1, mainly because Barry is way too mopey and dopey.

Pretty good. But for me, not as tear / chill inducing as when they used Williams in the first season trailer. Switching from a few bars of the new Supergirl score's buildup, to the Superman 'slow trumpets' after she makes her first big save and reveals herself? Still gets me.

Yeah! That's a great trailer... although Deadpool has forever ruined the Superhero Landing...

The use of "Fight Song" at the DNC and in the first season trailer and the mutual use of "Stronger Together" means I've got a mutually reinforcing love of Supergirl and the Clinton campaign going on in my head.

The third game in the Lego Batman series does the same thing with Wonder Woman as well, playing the them from the Linda Carter show every time she takes to the air. (And there's a whole bonus level that I won't ruin for anyone but made me geek squeal even louder.)

For the most part I've ended up discarding Marvel TV shows (I liked daredevil, but haven't got around to S2 yet) in favour of DC and completely discarding DC movies in favour of Marvel.
Marvel movies are fun superhero romps whilst the TV shows are of a darker more serious tone, and I guess the opposite is true of DC.
I think maybe just goes to show that what I want out of my superheroes is not grimdark realism.

Supergirl is definitely my favourite Superhero show right now though.
It has completely rehabilitated the Super[Man/Girl/Boy/Woman/Dog/Horse/Cat/FutureCat/Monkey/Ape]* franchises.

Saw that last night. Supergirl's happiness at seeing she is in the fight club is just as joyous as when the Flash brought her ice cream last season. Special bonus: Digg meets J'onn J'onzz!

The way she says "What's with all the mysterious mystery?" moved me deep inside; I don't think one should not care so deeply about a fictional character.
