This made me smile so much that I forgot to breathe and now I'm coughing and cackling over how adorable those photos are

It's really a shame that the whole "extremely cool engagement photos with a black metal band in the background" thing is overshadowing the fact that this guy is John AWESOME.

This is great. I hope the band uses one of these pictures as their album cover, too.

Awesome. (John Awesome!) Reminds me of this story of newlyweds happening upon a rap music video.

I have very mixed feelings about the whole thing with wives taking the husband's name as a matter of tradition or whatever. (I know of one or two couples where the husband took the wife's name.) But how the hell do you not change your last name to Awesome at the first opportunity?

I am really glad I wasn't the only one thinking the buried lede here was that last name. I WANT TO BE MRS. AWESOME.

Also this was fantastic, thanks for sharing!

Aha! Wandering through mossy woods, I have never been able to shake the feeling that black metal bands might come springing out from behind tree trunks or lichen-bedecked hillocks at any moment.

This proves me right!

(also I'm quite jealous that this thing I have been joking about for years actually happened to someone)

If he wasn't born with that surname I call fake.

I usually find engagement pictures a little silly, but this is the best thing I've seen all day. That's the kind of thing that happens to you when your name is Awesome.

This story—unbelievably—buries the lede, which is that there is a real person named "John Awesome."

and that he does not go with Johnny. Heroes do heroic things.

It appears that Awesome is not his actual name:

real name is Nguyen. Not sure why but this taints it for me.

In a world in which all right-thinking persons agree that gender is a matter of personal identity rather than biological morphology, surely we can find common ground in the concept that one defines ones' true name ones' self.

goddam possessive apostrophes, one is still uncertain if one has engaged in correct usage or incorrect usage

It's a nice day for a
Black wedding!

(yes I know Billy Idol is not black metal)

(also: it irks me that John Awesome's favorite movie is "Forrest Gump.")

Is this where I admit that when I read "black metal band" in the context of an engagement shoot I thought they found a ring made out of black metal somewhere in the woods and wondered why they were making such a fuss over it?

I realize what a low form of trollery it is to shout "Fake!" but honestly...

Ehhhhh... I don't want to be that guy and it's funny either way.

Thank you peacheater! Yes, that was exactly my first thought too. I came in here just to confirm that I'm not the only one. Thanks for making me feel a little less silly.

I'm feeling a little curmudgeon-y this morning, so forgive me, but this story is so twee that all I can think of is the first episode of the new season of Black Mirror.

They did! Then they foolishly used that wring to call up minions from Satan's Darkest Pits! Then came the guitar solo, and Madness and Darkness reigned over All...

I don't know where else I'm going to get to tell this story, so:

A friend of mine got married a few years back, and was agonizing over what to do about a last name. I am usually 100% on the keep-your-name train, but this friend's surname is Coffey, pronounced like the elixir of life. Her husband is a Moore. I don't ask for much in this life, but I am still the faintest bit disappointed that we were deprived of Mr. and Mrs. Moore-Coffey.
