Some tech co. that isn't a tire fire burning money should launch a clone ASAP. Instagram, maybe? They've already got a young audience. There's something there, and a bunch of folks looking for a new home, it's just not immediately clear how to monetize it.

There was another major harrsment issue on Twitter yesterday, chasing off comics author Chelsea Cain, and as in pretty much every case except when an SNL star was targeted they've done fuck all about it.

Let's hope once they collapse their successor does a better job on this.

Too old to really get Vine, too young to be properly grumpy about it.

I'm actually kind of shocked Twitter couldn't figure out what to do with it, though, since it seemed so popular with so many advertiser-friendly demographics. This bodes very, very ill for the service as a whole.

Going into the Vines linked in the FPP just now, I can't get them to play sound regardless of what I do. I really wanted to hear duck army again...

I can't say I'm surprised, actually. Twitter (for its many, many problems) offers a sort of broadcast text platform that no other service really matches. Vine seems to be more or less redundant if you have Insta, Snapchat, or YouTube. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Twitter going forward. It almost seems like an essential Internet service at this point (especially with regards to breaking news), but the corporate side of things just can't seem to make it work.

Artw: Twitter's abuse problem is reportedly part of the reason Disney chose not to buy it

No one wants to buy Twitter (The Verge, Oct 14, 2016).
The emotional roller coaster that is Twitter’s future seems to have hit a new low today as Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff tells the Financial Times his company has “walked away” from making a bid to buy it.

If you’re keeping track, that’s now... pretty much everyone who’s said they’re not interested in buying Twitter. Neither Google nor Disney plan to bid on Twitter, despite reports saying both were interested. Recode says that Apple is likely also out of the picture. And Verizon immediately dismissed speculation that it was considering a bid.

Facebook is also said to be uninterested, according to CNBC. And while Microsoft’s name has been tossed around, no one seems to think the acquisition would make any sense for an increasingly enterprise-focused company.

So it very much sounds like no one is going to make a bid on Twitter this week. Which means that the possibility of a Twitter acquisition, at least for now, appears to be over.
And Twitter is laying off 9% of its employees after it posted a loss of $103 million for the quarter (NPR, October 27, 2016)

Also related: Twitter's Dual Challenges: Taming The Trolls, Attracting More Users (NPR, October 26, 2016), which provides a good summary of the issue at hand: "as we all know, you know, if you allow very free speech, what you end up doing is actually chilling the rights or the - or the possibility that others will join in."

The Vine mobile app is perfectly designed and perfectly implemented. There is absolutely nothing better for getting a short video quickly and cleanly and sharing it to your friends and parents. It's so much less hassle that recording through your phone app, editing, then posting to YouTube and sending the link out to the YouTube video.

I was skeptical, but once I started using it, I made a ton of Vines over a couple of years. I hope Twitter changes their mind and sells it off rather than shutters it.

I guess i'm not surprised? This always seemed like the ultimate meme-service, like beyond pokemon go. Something that gets one white hot flash of usage and then slowly dies until it's either shuttered or sold off to some shady ad company like myspace.

Everyone i know who was into this just does snapchat stories now. IG and snapchat completely stole its thunder, for everyone but the people who got ~vine famous~, and even then they usually parlayed that into having super popular IG accounts.

It's like the app version of a super popular holiday toy that gets on the news for selling out at every store.

Not saying there wasn't great content, just that

It would not have happened on Facebook or as a group text or in Google Hangout because all of those would have required some selecting of audience first or intent to engage particular people or something with a higher barrier to entry than person tweeting: "Ugh, [this ballot resource] is great but I'm still conflicting about [this ballot question]." and lively informative respectful discussion ensued.

I really will miss Twitter an awful lot if it goes forever.

And the Vine tech team would have told you about the long-standing video autoplay debate among browser development teams. (Autoplay or not? Mute or not? Differentiate between mobile and desktop clients?) That's finally being addressed in a coherent way, but too late for Vine.

Anyway, like so many nice things on the internets, Vine was constrained and messy and rewarded creativity from unexpected sources: in retrospect, the link to sample culture is obvious, but nobody saw it at the time. Despite the emergence of various Vine stars, it was obviously hard to monetise as a platform, but dear me it's the Twitter tech product that's least toxic right now.

This is one of those posts that make me feel as if I've crossed over from a parallel universe*. I think of myself as an informed adult. I certainly read more the average person (i.e., probably as much as the typical mefite), NPR is my background noise, I waste very little time on crappy TV, and since I've been living with a pc since 1984 (coincidently, the year I turned 30), I'm on top of most things computer-related. In short, probably a fairly typical mefite, albeit a standard deviation or two from the average age. (Despite the latter, I'm OK with all the kids playing on my lawn, 24/7.)

Yet, I swear to god I had never even heard of Vine prior to this post. And now I'm wondering why 6 second videos became a thing in the first place. And why you all have so many favorites that apparently people are all the time sharing with each other. Are there secret meetings that I'm not invited to?

*See also: posts and comments that assume that everyone does or should communicate via Facebook and Twitter, plus the latest messaging app, which 6 months from now will be replaced by something new.

As a young person who spends a lot of time on Tumblr and uses memes almost daily, this reminds me of how fleeting all of it seems to be--and that saddens me a little. The way my friends and I talk is heavily influenced by the kind of humor we see online. misspelling things on purpose, messing with punctuation and format, making references to memes--all of those things can have really specific and subtle meanings in our conversations that are hard to impart otherwise. But the subculture of tumblr and memes in general changes so quickly, and is forgotten so quickly, that sometimes I wonder whether I'll have any real evidence of it left when I'm older besides what my friends and I can remember. I look at old threads and forums now and see broken links everywhere--sure, things like the Internet Archive can save some of it, but a lot of it is still lost.

Twitter's R&D expense of $800M in CY2015 was bigger than Apple's R&D expense as late as FY07 ($782M).

Apple in the OS X transition period was spending $400M/yr on R&D.

I'm heartbroken by this news! I went on Vine everyday and followed so many interesting people. Funny, talented, artistic people. Here are some of my favorite people out of my almost 2,000 likes. So hard to choose.

Guess Who

Rupaul's Drag Race Cats

White People at Sporting Events

Tumblr Horror Movie

Electrolemon

Beyonce - Hot Sauce

Vine claims they're going to keep the archives up, but in case you don't trust 'em, Archive Team is working to make backups. You can tell them your favorites and their systems will automatically grab them:

- by filling out a form (twitter link)
- or by tweeting them and mentioning @archiveteam (twitter link)

I gobbled down a bunch of these and dragged them home to share with the wife. The Vine website is so janky, like surprisingly so for how popular it got. The player had all sorts of weird glitches both here and at work across a number of browsers. There seemed to be no way of navigating across creator's content without searching. Chrome shows a weird plus that does nothing, the volume control is whack-a-mole impossible to click for me, the logo floats off the top of the page...

I mean, it seems like a site that was shuttered long ago and left to degrade now.
