Nobody Wins

After a year of tense anticipation, the day of reckoning is finally here. GWAR turns in a special Election Day contribution to the AV Club Undercover series, taking on AC/DC's "If You Want Blood, You Got It." This year's performance interpolates Boston's "Foreplay" as an intro, as well as two special election-themed guests. NSFW: extensive silly costume gore, some nudity, general bombastic ridiculousness. Man, rock tunes don't get much more elemental than that.

Americans: we just want to tell you good luck, we're all counting on you.

Favorited on principle and I'm pretty sure you can legally shoot the one with the horns after September. Even with expert preparation he probably tastes like Old Spice and butthole. Hopefully Old Spice.

Hockey is still a sport for gormless people that pretend to like sports. It's a capade.

I had season tickets.

I'm going to come right out and say it: I feel like GWAR's political positions lack nuance and deeper understanding of the issues at stake.

I'm not mad. Just disappointed.

It's like they don't take anything seriously.

You know, I wasn't going to do this because I don't want to look like a conspiracy theorist, but I saw them last year, and they had a poorly constructed divider wall thing on the stage that toppled over for a few seconds, and there was a guy wearing half of an "internet troll" costume.

Someone ran and put the divider back up really quick, but I saw what I saw, and I think it really speaks to their character that they would use a fake character like that. It was just a guy in a costume!

I did not know they were continuing, after death of the frontthing. I wonder what GWAR auditions are like?

Their new vocalist is pretty good.

That is a more than credible Bon Scott impression - GWAR doesn't get enough credit for being insanely tight, either.

The last thing I expected in middle of a GWAR performance was the lead singer saying, "This is problematic. I don't know about this..." Pretty great cover, though.

No one is Bon, but this guy fills Bon's shoes better than Axl.

GWAR is not a video medium band. You really need to wear old clothes and get splattered with fake blood to get the full impact.

But that was a great damn video.

Also if you like oldies but goodies this actually goes better here than it would in the Phil Collins thread: Genesis Land of Confusion Ronald Reagan puppets.

I love that the guitarist has an incongruous/not incongruous but somehow gloriously naive marijuana leaf sticker on his guitar. Indeed, looking at both the bass and guitar I was sort of touched by how not-Gwar both instruments look.

I was actually surprised by how... dry... the goreFX were, considering they went to the trouble of putting up the tarps in the sound booth this time too. I've seen them about a dozen times at the 9:30, and those shows will soak you to the tips of your socks INSIDE your boots. It's truly impressive.. I've drank fluids you people wouldn't believe. Attack dicks on fire off the shoulder of Urungus. I watched pee-beams glitter in the dark near the Gor-Gor Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like jizz in rain. Time to die.

"Nobody wins"

( tight fucking cover though. Also, until you've splattered by GWAR juice you haven't been to a live show. Approx a thousand years ago I was in a mosh pit in R.Va. and Oderus cut open Slymenstra Hymen's belly and ripped out the fetus, offspring of oh who knows. The fetus comes flying out and just like that he lost the crowd. For a second, everyone was just like - oof, yeah? You're really gonna do that? And with a mighty bellow, yes, yes he was... And we all fell back in. It was pretty great.)

This led me to look up the Axl-fronted AC/DC playing "You Want Blood," and as it happens Axl might be a better AC/DC front man than he is a GnR front man.

I saw gwar at the Recher Theater in Baltimore in 2000, walls all covered with plastic, I got soaked in fake blood, fucking badass.

This. Every time I see performance footage of Gwar, I think "How the HELL do they manage to play that well in those costumes? Can they even see their instruments?"
