The Master is With Us Always

Tom Neyman, best known as "The Master" in the film Manos: The Hands of Fate has passed away at age 80. The news comes from his daughter, Jackey Neyman Jones, who played Debbie in the legendary Z-Movie riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000. MST3k Fansite Satellite News reports as well.

Jackey Neyman Jones has been working on a sequel film to titles Manos Returns, starring herself and her father.

Aww! We will have to have a tribute to him on MST Club this week. We often show interesting or weird things before the movie, and it looks like this week's preroll has been chosen for us.

Due to a herniated disc suffered during my college days, and the awkward pain shuffle I developed, my roommates (all of us were MST fans, and played the drinking game one weekends) took to calling me Torgo.

When I finally ponied up my $5 to join, Torgo was immediately my first choice for username, only to find that someone had tried to sign up, entered the name, and abandoned their attempt, relegating my destiny to the void, forever.

Much love to his daughter who played Debbie. When she came to a local performance of a puppet version of Manos she was very generous with her time and attention, which lead to one of my favorite moments ever. She was taking questions and I asked why they had decided to make Torgo have giant knees. She said "Well, they needed an Igor character and they figured the hump had been done already".

lumpenprole - Apparently the plan was for Torgo to be a satyr. Or at least resemble one. They made a partial costume, if you can call a device made with coat hangers and foam a costume. Like many other things in this movie, they didn't put too much effort into it. So you end up with a guy looking like he has bad legs doing the Torgo shuffle, with nothing to explain it.

Sad, as I always felt a touch of kinship with Mr Neyman. We used to watch M:tHoF in my house every Tuesday (the crown jewel of my roommate's recorded-off-first-airing MST3K videotapes being the hastily-labeled cassette that bore only the words manos - WORST MOVIE) -- "Manos Tuesday" became the shuddersome dread of our friends upon whom we would foist it as a sort of a weekly rite of passage into our social group, which effectively engendered a sort of trauma bonding effect among us. In fact, me and that roommate once split an $800 prize in a costume contest where I went as The Master (bedsheet, black and red spraypaint, poorly-adhered mustache) and he as Torgo (basically stuffing his pants with balled-up boxer shorts) -- a contest that had been unwisely decided by an electronic "applause-o-meter" which our same tormented friends basically short-circuited by surrounding and screaming into as soon as we took the stage.
