No "Akira!" post-credits scene?

This is pretty much the movie as I remember it. I can't even imagine what was edited out.

I just remember some kid who had bad migraines all the time.

Yeah man. Like, totally.

Thanks. Now I have to read the six volumes again. I've watched the movie a few times and read through the books once. It sounds like the books deserve far more time.

Men! We're going to the olympics!

(if anyone knows where I can find that dub I'd be infinitely grateful.)

Hmmm. I have a Xth generation boot from the late 80s that has a very different dub than what the current DVD release is. The script is less coherent and things like the girlfriends of the bikers all sound like they are done by one person, and the majority of the generals lines are just him growling. Not sure if that's the version you're referring to, but I've wondered myself if there is a version of that that exists floating around the internet...

I love that late 80s dub, the first English dub that has lines like "just when my coil is reaching the green line" which took me some 50 viewings to understand WTF he was talking about.

I love that dub so much. The newer dubs feel sanitized and less mystical to me. I had to watch my Xth generation VHS copy something like 10 times before I even had a firm grasp on the plot via the words as opposed to just the visuals. Also, LSD might have been involved.

Close your eyes when Kaneda is talking, and imagine instead that it's Leonardo the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. If the voices match, it's the dub in question.

I purchased a special edition DVD of it years ago that boasted a new, more accurate dub to go along with the original Japanese language track. I watched with glee until the moment with the general came and went without that line, and I recall thinking at that moment, "This DVD is useless to me".

What I most noticed was how, as the edit progressed, the pronunciation of "Kaneda" sounded more and more like "Canada".

Oh, Canada!!!

Apparently the 25th Anniversary release from 2013 has both dubs on it.

When I would profess my love for this movie, a few friends would respond with the refrain of "Kaneda! Tetsuo!" as a counter argument. That's what struck them as representing the whole movie.

It should be noted, though, that in Japanese drama, screaming out something, especially someone's name, is not as simplistic and simply puzzling as it sounds in English. There's more subtlety for the Japanese audience member, and it's based on the emotional context of the scene. In short, yelling names over and over sounds weird to a Western audience but doesn't, necessarily, to a Japanese one.

I love that dub so much. The newer dubs feel sanitized and less mystical to me.

I totally disagree. The original English dub was a rushed job and the dialogue and voice acting is--at least partly--really terrible. A new version came out around 2003-ish with a DVD release and it's so much better (as are the visuals as well). Clunky dialogue from the original was greatly improved...though I think there's still a lot of "Tetsuo!"s and "Kaneda!"s.

The basic question of Akira fandom remains the same: The bike or the rifle?

There's no question the newer dub(s) are smoother and more accessible than the original. The problem with them is that they don't include the line "Men, we're going to the olympics!"

Fix that and everyone is happy.

What year did the Olympics happen in Tokyo as per the Akira plotline?

Neo-Tokyo was to host the Olympics in 2020, and the plot happens in 2019. [Previously on MeFi]

"Clunky dialogue from the original" is what I remember most - not that it was good or bad, just that it brings back to memory the wonder and amazement of such a great film.

I have a feeling that that dub may only be found on the laserdisc edition.

I'm kind of surprised this took so long to appear as it feels very natural.
