Boots and pants and boots and pants. OK fine I guess I'll stare at my phone and laugh on this bus ride.

(A few of these have been taken down for being bullying, and some of them are kinda sour, so just a heads up; laugh at the good, report the bad)

In the months following the September 11 2001 attack, it became clear to me that Jackass the Movie was the defining cultural statement of the American Response.

This could well be the Trumpian equivalent.

I came across this a few weeks ago, and watched most of them. Many of them are indeed quite funny. Some are just "ow-my-balls" style humor. A few are...kind of gross.

So, be aware of that. But there are some gems in there.

There are definitely a couple of videos in there that suddenly make the whole thing a lot less funny. Can't decide between the "OBAMA WANTS TO KILL YOUR BABIES" one or the "Mom beats her child offscreen" one.

We are all that old lady who's questioning her own sanity
posted by numaner at 4:57 PM on January 24, 2017 [9 favorites]

I stopped watching after the couple targeted the elderly woman in a Walmart (the baby in your hair prank). If the person compiling this thought it was funny (along with the Hello Darkness soundtrack), then I can guess the rest of this is generally mean-spirited, "hey look someone is getting hit in the crotch" kinda funny I really don't need these days.

Nooooooo not the one with the spinny doll in the fire awwwww now I'm sad.

Some of these are great though.

It's definitely a mixed bag. I've snorted unexpectedly several times, clicked quickly past a few others, on the whole pretty fun.
posted by OHenryPacey at 5:05 PM on January 24, 2017

It kinda seems like Reddit Concentrate. Some of these are great, and some of them are people falling and hurting themselves.

And the elderly woman in the supermarket probably is not questioning her sanity so much as questioning whether she's being set up to get mugged or something. As with most "pranks", the people pulling it are substantially less clever and delightful than they think they are.

A few of them, like the Airbus going into the trees, are people dying.

The VO on the Airbus video says it's the world's first un-piloted flight of this plane. So if anyone was onboard....Test pilots maybe? Hopefully no one.

Yeah, some are really funny and light. Others are, "Yeeesh. Do not want!"
posted by hot_monster at 5:45 PM on January 24, 2017

I didn't get as far as the Airbus, and now I won't. One of my least favorite things about the internet is accidentally seeing somebody die while looking for stupid, momentary, procrastinatory diversions.

Air France 296 with *looks* 136 people on board. Three died. I think the voiceover says "autopiloted," not unpiloted. The A320 was the first fly-by-wire airliner where pilots ask the computer to make the airplane do stuff, and that may have played some role in the crash. Glancing, it looks like the usual thing where a whole bunch of things had to go wrong simultaneously.

A lot of the rest really were cute, though.

I have this terrible cold right now that makes me cough pretty much endlessly. It really sucks, and I've been trying to avoid talking or laughing or anything else that might upset my cranky lungs. Suffice to say that watching many of these was exactly the wrong thing for me to do tonight.. but I have zero regrets. Thanks for cheering me up!

East Hills Mall is in St. Joseph, MO, along the east bank of the Mississippi.

Sandra Annenberg is a Brazillian sports newscaster, and she flopped like the subjects of her reporting often do.

I was into page 8 of trying to track down the "Name a yellow fruit!" contestant. I skipped from page three to page 8, wish I han't, so I just want to say.

His/Her answer (the 70's were an ambiguous time in denim, no matter how you identified) is hilarious not just because it's dumb, but because you can see yourself saying the same damn thing in the same damn situation.

The next video was straight up fist-clenching, rage-making awful.

The video after that, decent.

The video after that, excellent!

Toddler toddling yo...

shitposts until the German Drummer Kid. Noice.

The pool-hall Dog Hustler was good, too.

Skip the next two, because the first is boring, and the second will leave a hole in your heart once you stop laughing.

The next one, you have to wonder what her voice sounds like without helium! So happy!

The next one, removed for bullying. Done with the list, noping out.

Today: my dad had surgery; I spent hours in traffic because of a road that is still partially flooded due to rain that happened LAST WEEK; I'm super behind on my two non-work side projects; I'm getting a cold probably, and apparently my body can't even handle non-gluten pasta, which I'm finding out the hard way; I'm in a constant state of anxiety at work because I feel like there is someone watching every move waiting for me to mess up so they can call me on it; suffering from three nights of not-great sleep, mostly due to the above named factors, and also partially due to me losing my nightguard a month ago and still not having a replacement and with my TMJ acting up it's a constant battle to see what hurts more: my neck, my jaw, or my teeth.

However. Between this playlist (oh yes, I watched every single video) and the Obama basketball article, I feel a lot better. Thanks for that, metafilter.

There were definitely a few clunkers and a few really awful things, but I laughed myself to tears so many times that my cats kept coming over to see what was wrong.

I keep watching Nates Firepole Fall over and over. It is perfection.
posted by mochapickle at 1:21 AM on January 25, 2017

I got as far as #278 before bedtime. The later ones tended to be longer and not funny, so I started skipping anything longer than one minute (though I did watch that long New Years Eve one). I would say that some are just perfect, but a lot of them are fairly meh. Better than watching reruns on TV though.

Once you start getting into the end of the list into the longer videos that aren't as funny, start checking the comments (I noticed this around 280-290 or so)... It's other viewers of "Important Videos" urging each other on to the finish line.

Once you get to around 250 or so in the playlist, the videos become a little longer - 1 or 3 minute ones become the standard. And you know what? Some of us are trying to work here.
