It looks like "foter" but it's really "foyer," ie, home.

Most people don't realize that Wharton, who had moved to France several years previously, was hugely involved in relief efforts in Europe during WWI. She wrote a remarkable descriptive passage of a visit to a relief station in a letter to Henry James:
Picture this all under a white winter sky, driving great flurries of snow across the mud-&-cinder-coloured landscape, with the steel cold Meuse winding between beaten poplars--Cook standing with Her [her car] in a knot of mud-colored military motors & artillery horses, soldiers coming & going, cavalrymen riding up with messages, poor bandaged creatures in rag-bag clothes leaning in doorways, & always, over & above us, the boom, boom, boom of the guns on the gray heights to the east. It was Winter War to the fullest, just in that little insignificant corner of theimmense affair!--And those big, summing-up impressions meet one at every turn. I shall never forget the 15 mile run from Verdun to that particular ambulance, across a snow-covered rolling country sweeping up to the white sky, with no one in sight but now & then a cavalry patrol with a blown cloak struggling along against the wind.--
When I finally worked out that The Age of Innocence was actually a post-war book, it blew my mind.
