So, silly question, now that no one buys CDs and everything is downloaded, are album covers really a thing anymore? Or are they like the save icon that no one recognizes as a floppy?

What does 'album cover' mean to folks who never wandered through a Sam Goody and picked up a physical album?

I have all their demo tapes.

It's only with dogs that you need to worry about picking up all the hot numbers that they drop.
With cats, you just wait until their 'best of' collection is old and stale, then get it all in one shot.

are album covers really a thing anymore

You've got to have something that looks good in "now playing" so that's kind of a thing. And you need decent art for the $30 limited edition double LP vinyl pressing.

now that no one buys CDs
I'm still buying CDs constantly. Mostly used stuff - thrift stores and Second Spin rule. In my area, Walmart is officially now the only place selling new CDs.

are album covers really a thing anymore?
Still vital to me at least.

imagine a world where album covers were like store-brand products they all had the same basic colors and font I don't believe there would be any classic albums people would be like 'yeah dark side of the moon gave me an emotion *throws in trash* did we buy doritos'

I know a librarian who is an amateur photographer and who got one of his photos (of his pet dog Sidney) published by National Geographic. Soon after, Weezer came along and said, "Can we use this?"

#2 actually does look like an album cover, probably from about 1972. I really want to hear that album.

According to the comments, at least one of the livestock portraits is by Rob MacInnis.

His work is really wonderful.

It's an older release, from the mathowie era, but:

Generic album covers are definitely a thing. If you collect "private press" records from the pre-CD era (e.g., records where people paid their own money to get them recorded), you certainly see a lot of the same stock album covers over and over again. Check out this very extensive Generic Covers Gallery on rateyourmusic.com. It's got generic old mill by a lake, generic sundial, generic clouds, generic rainbow in clouds, generic holy sunlight through the trees for Christian records, etc. etc.
